Richt has played Miles once. He's 3-1 against Brooks, and each game was quite lopsided except for the recent 24-20 loss. The LSU matchup wasn't close. Nice try there, slick.
I think it's all about the *fit* of a coach with a program...but, I'll touch on that in a sec. You can't take a thing away from Richt and how he currently ranks in the SEC coaching tier. He hasn't finished worse than 3rd in the E (this past season and only once) and his resume' has a couple of SECC's on it. Perfect fit for the UGA crowd especially IF you added a NC to his trophy case and then he'd be set at UGA for years. (heck of a job at FSU as OC if you'll think back about it.) Along the same line, I don't think SOS is a good fit for USC simply because it's USC. IF you base the last couple of years as the reference point (as Bengal Buddy did earlier in the thread) he doesn't belong in the top 3, does he? If you look around the SEC you'll find some great *fits* at a lot of programs...Brooks with UK, Fulmer with UT, Meyer with UF...
Saban recruited all of those kids and they were all committed except for Perriloux before Miles arrived. Again, it's a huge stretch to mark anyone in 2005 as a Miles recruit.
I'm totally happy with CLM. He's a great all round college football coach. The SEC is stacked with great coaches as we all know. I just can't imagine a recruit not wanting to play for any of the SEC schools and get to play the type of high profile schedule the SEC offers. Can you imagine being a high profile recruit today and trying to decide where to play?
Bullchit. Several recruits backed out of their LSU commitments after Saban left. They all could have. The players that signed in 2005 are Miles' recruits. Period. So, you're the last anti-Miles holdout for 2007, eh?
I'm not sold on Miles yet. This is not saying that I won't be though. Far too early for me to pass legitimate judgement.
I don't know how you objectively rank coaches, so I won't try. Wins are great, but for me, you have to win the SEC championship to be included in the top group. Doing that automatically puts you in the MNC hunt. Consistency of the program is also very important, but you gotta win that championship at some point. The 22 wins are great. Finishing in the top 5 is great. But winning championships is what it's all about. This is the year for that to happen.
And the reason for his occasional good year is that he makes unrealistic promises to recruits, who commit and get significant playing time then end up transferring in the offseason because the didn't get what they were promised. He doesn't have much integrity as a coach right now.
Agreed, but isn't it funny that Miles gets no credit for his record, but Meyer doesn't have the same problem? And you can bet that Saban won't have any credit going to Shula, just like he gives no credit to Dinardo for his eary success here. No doubt about it, Fair is what comes to town once a year. It's got nothing to do with football.
