You are correct, maybe not in every situation but in many. I have personal experience to "amen" your assertion.

Simple answer:nobody remembers the honor grad.
everybody remembers the all american.

Complex answer: Athletics in general and football in particular teaches many intangibles that the classroom doesn't. Teamwork, discipline, work ethic, and character just to name a few.
