I did all of that. I lived in Steiner Ranch which is nestled between Lake Austin and Lake Travis, about 5 min from the Oasis. The backyard is no more, though.
I've heard from other people that Austin is a great city and they were people that only visited. When I was looking at colleges someone that was advising me said that Austin is probably the best city with a university. Not necessarily the best university, but located in the best city overall. He said BR was above average, which is probably where I would rank it, and College Station was the worst.
Apparently 10 years ago College Station was kind of in the middle of nowhere.. Well, I didn't know it then, but I can tell you now it's surrounded by strip malls full of suburban crap. If you like chain restaurants like Applebees, Walmarts, and the like, College Station is the place for you. Baton Rouge itself I think is above average, but the LSU area itself I think is great. I'd love to have one of those houses in College Town or on one of the Lakeshore Drs. You'd have to put up with some college kid douchebaggery, but it would be worth it to be right there and walk to Death Valley and the Box.
1) Pretty much anywhere between Chauvin and the Gulf of Mexico. 2) Houma 3) Chicago 4) Austin (but only during SXSW) 5) The 40 mile stretch along US 71 between Windon, MN and Okiboji Iowa.
1. Pensacola Beach to Cape San Blas with my wife and kids 2. Gulf of Mexico-1 to 100 miles offshore(Venice to Carabelle) 3. In the woods in MS in the spring chasing turkeys 4. Watching the Tigers kick a@* on a Saturday night in Tiger Stadium 5. MO,OK,KS and TX turkey hunting
In no particular order... Southern Wyoming/Northern Colorado Redneck Riviera...Anywhere from Gulf Shores to Destin. Northern California...that drive along Hwy 1 is incredible. New Hampshire coast Maui
heard about the bats and also heard that they, um, poop on you when they leave the bridge. 6th street...went there only once and was impressed with the amount of bands playing for free. 2 per bar, one downstairs and one upstairs/on roof...very awesome! didn't see one drunk there, though. maybe i picked a bad night. ha, oasis. great, great view. funny that people clap when the sun sets, like it's never done that before.
Austin is a fun town, but the climate is nothing special and it is getting pretty big with too many people. I love to visit Austin, but I wouldn't live there. It's a great place for a musician, though. The only one of my old 70's musician chums who is still working as a professional musician lives in Austin and gets all the gigs he wants. He plays electric and string bass in three bands and does session work for recordings.
