    General Dan Sickles, who commanded a Yankee brigade at Gettysburg, was the first American to successfully use the defense of "temporary insanity" in court. He killed his wife's lover in a rage of jealousy. The lover was Barton Key, son of national anthem composer Francis Scott Key.
