Today is the anniversary of the sale of the first loaves of pre-packaged, pre-sliced bread (1928). In 1943, the sale of sliced bread was briefly banned as an "unnecessary wartime extravagance."

Looking for a tax shelter in tax-happy England after making a killing on their Dark Side of the Moon album, Pink Floyd invested in the production of the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Led Zeppelin and Elton John also hid profits from the government by helping to finance Holy Grail.

During WWII, the U.S. Navy bought a barge that was essentially outfitted as a floating ice cream machine, and assigned it to the Pacific Fleet. It could produce about 80 gallons of ice cream an hour and keep about 2,000 gallons frozen onboard. The navy had several "crockery" barges, sort of floating warehouses, like the one pictured below, but only one that was purposed solely for making and storing ice cream.

John Prine was co-writer on "You never even called me by my name" the big hit by David Allen Coe.

He told Steve Goodman he didn't want to be credited with it.

This one seems timely......Charles King holds the record for winning the world's most fraudulent election. In 1927, he was elected President of Liberia, which had 15,000 registered voters at the time. King amassed 234,000 votes.
