During WWII, the U.S. Navy bought a barge that was essentially outfitted as a floating ice cream machine, and assigned it to the Pacific Fleet. It could produce about 80 gallons of ice cream an hour and keep about 2,000 gallons frozen onboard. The navy had several "crockery" barges, sort of floating warehouses, like the one pictured below, but only one that was purposed solely for making and storing ice cream.
