I am reluctant to give money to organized charities because most of the money raised is spent on things other than helping the people it is supposed to help. After donations poured into the United Way coffers following 9-11 it was learned that UW spent $80,000 on a desk for the head of the New York UW. I would rather give money to a crackhead if he is at least honest enough to admit he is going to spend the money on crack
Some "things" are of vital necessity after a disaster. Things like food, bottled water, blankets, ect
It is faster and cheaper to buy them locally. Donated clothing and canned goods almost never get sent overseas to tsunami victims and such, they get handed out locally. Handling all that crap is a logistical nightmare. Write a check. Then they can buy four truckloads of bottled water on pallets, load it on a C-17, and get it there fast and easy.
The New York Yankees announced that they are going to retire the #6 worn by former manager Joe Torre. Derek Jeter's #2 will surely be retired shortly after his retirement. The Yankees will be out of single digit numbers, having already retired the others. Here are the single-digit retired Yankees, a who's who of baseball history: 1 — Billy Martin 3 — Babe Ruth 4 — Lou Gehrig 5 — Joe DiMaggio 7 — Mickey Mantle 8 — Yogi Berra and Bill Dickey 9 — Roger Maris * Dickey wore No. 8 first, then passed it down to Berra, his protege. The Yankees retired it in 1972 to honor them both. The other retired Yankee numbers are as follows: 10 — Phil Rizzuto 15 — Thurman Munson 16 — Whitey Ford 23 — Don Mattingly 32 — Elston Howard 37 — Casey Stengel 42 — Mariano Rivera 44 — Reggie Jackson 49 — Ron Guidry
A poronkusema is a unit of measurement used by the Sami people of Finland. It's the distance a reindeer can travel before it needs to urinate.
