LSU had 11 runs off 14 hits tonight! ULL had 7 hits (3 off Bourgeois in 1 inn, 1 off Rumbelow in 1 inn, 3 off Glenn in 7 inn), but only 2 runs to show for it (both off Bourgeois) Coming into the game, ULL had been averaging 8.1 runs per game and .322 at the plate, including .356 in the last week (last 4 games)
Comments from a ULL forum: Crowd was packed probably 90% Cajuns. Just weren't enough tickets that went on on sale to the public for LSU fans to get many. Cajuns not playing too well tonight. Pretty impressed with the crowd though. Tough night for the home team. Not that it matters but this is LSU's best team since they won it all in 2009. Best of luck the rest of the season and hopefully we can meet up in the post-season! Geaux Cajuns! LSU has a fine, fine team.. I dont think we are as bad as we showed tonight. Congrats on the victory. Cajuns move forward. No doubt in my mind the Cajuns are better than what they showed tonight.
"I'm extremely proud and encouraged by our team's performance, especially playing on the road for the first time this season," said LSU coach Paul Mainieri . "(LSU starter) Cody Glenn was magnificent on the mound, and he set the tone with an tremendous outing. I thought we were aggressive at the plate the entire night and demonstrated how productive we can be throughout the lineup. It was an excellent overall effort by our club in a challenging environment."
Does Mainieri realize that most of Lafayette are LSU fans? I realize that a segment of Lafayette has become much more anti-LSU with the brainwashing that goes on at ULL. Also, I realize that tickets were scarce for last night's game and hard to find for Lafayette-area LSU fans. Did he just mean "I'm not sure there's a lot of people who have a deep love for LSU that will be at the game"? For the Robichaux's comment, I know that ULL fans enjoy taking shots at LSU fans by saying the football success since 2000 has created a huge increase of casual fans. I've heard comments saying that the chances of someone wearing an LSU shirt having actually attended school there is very small. Is Robichaux playing to this mentality? Not sure if the subject line was done to get a rise out of LSU fans. Also, I think it's great that LSU has attracted so many new fans locally and nationally. I've never played or worked for the Saints but that doesn't stop me from being a fan.
First of all...I live 20 miles north of Lafayette.......I spend alot of time in lafayette umpiring baseball, and officiating football.....I CAN tell you this......I am die hard LSU fan since the late 80's.....however I do support ULL athletics. Alot of Lafayette people are like me....die hard LSU fans but also support ULL athletics. There are however...just like any other fanbase in the country, a select group of fans that do not like LSU(the big brother that we all look up too) and take a shot at LSU whenever they can, and LOVE nothing more than to beat LSU. Tony Robicheaux is a good guy....he very much respects LSU and gets along very well with paul manerri. That was not the case when smoke L, was there they did not like each other and it flowed over to the players and fans, that's why the paused the series for a while to let things cool down. Tony and Skip always did get along well also, so there was never any problems....program wise both programs have been very very succesfull in baseball.....just LSU to a more national scale, you can not compare the two as apples to apples....simply because of the size ot the athletic budgets.....it's more like comparing apples to grapes. So when the grape jumps up and beats the apple......it's a big deal to them, but I would say 70% of ULL fans are LSU fans first........and that includes me.
I'm also an LSU fan first and attempted to support the Cajuns when I lived there (80s-90s). Some of my friends are like you and genuinely root for both. When I started getting texts from ULL friends rubbing it in when we almost lost to Troy, I started to actually pull against the Cajuns in most cases. When I went to watch the LSU-UGA at a friend's house in Lafayette (Lee's freshman year) that had about half LSU and half ULL fans, the Cajuns fans started high fiving and doing silly dances. I can accept fans from other teams being excited about beating my team but not fans from ULL being happy about UGA/Bama/etc beating us. Perhaps I should have thicker skin about these types of things. Good to hear that Tony/Paul/Skip have a good working relationship.
I personally support all the state teams, including Tulane and ULL, unless they're playing LSU. There's some real LSU envy in the ULL circles, but there's also a lot of big time LSU fans in Lafayette.
