Timing is everything in these matters. The pickings are slimmer than they otherwise would be because High-Zinger made certain that Fla had Meyer hired before the negotiations with Saban began.

HZ is a big Gator booster, and he very skillfully screwed LSU over by stealing our coach late in the game. HZ should have contacted Saban immediately after the LSU/Arky game, but he waited. Why? I suspect it's because he wanted to let Florida get their hire done before he sent LSU looking for a new HC.

    Timing is everything.

We never stood a chance with the likely 'big names' you are thinking of. Stoops, Tedford, Ferentz, etc etc. They were just never going to leave their schools for another college - that would be like them talking about stealing Saban away from LSU to go to USC if Carroll had jumped ship. It was just never going to happen.

There are big names interested I'm quite sure - the problem is the bigger the names, the more effort involved in keeping their interest QUIET!. We only end up hearing about the coaches who have something to prove, or want their name shopped around for publicity - those traits are not inherent in "A" level coaches. They want to do things behind the scenes, and if it doesn't work out we'll have never known it.

That is the way it is - take it or leave it.

This is a legitimate issue concerning whether or not we have a misconception about ourselves being a more appealing program than others view us.

if you honestly think the USC fans were hyped about getting Carroll several years ago, think again. the guy was a loser in the NFL at New York and New England, and his players hated him.

We are courting the hottest names in college football with Petrino, Miles, etc. If you are looking for a Belichek or Johnson, get real already.

I'd only be concerned about a misconception if you actually believed that a "top-tier program" in need of a coach would have the entire all-star cast of NCAA football coaching beating down the door. It just doesn't work that way.. as stated, timing is everything.

I can guarantee that if Petey Carroll decided to call it quits this week, USC's candidate list wouldn't vary much from ours, aside from geographical differences (ie Tedford would probably be a legit candidate). Who else exactly would you expect them to be interviewing?

    worthless comment

islstl has consistently posted some of the most insightful and meaningful information on this board in the last two years...and he has had the cajones to put himself on the line with some pretty sophisticated quantitative anaysis of the everchanging BCS environment and our Tigers' place in it. I see no reason why this qualitative issue he's introduced is any less relevant or valid. I'd love to see you post some predictions and thoughts over the next two years so that we can compare who is on target most often.

Tirk was just messing with Iststl... if you know about his BCS post you have also seen some of the heated exchanges that have gone on between alot of the daily posters... its like roommates, you are great friends but argue and make fun of each other sometimes.
