As an outsider I think yall have a great program, but after spending a month or so on this board, not quite the program a lot of people seem to think. Keep in mind, I am not talking to everybody on here, just a select few. A lot of people here seem to think LSU is on a completely different level then Auburn. Well as was stated in a different thread, our winning percentages over the past 5 years are almost completely equal. You have 2 SEC championships, we have 1. You guys won an MNC this year, and we should have a shot at one this year. (i know people will say yalls was 'real' and ours wasnt. but the fact remains that you happened to be lucky that nobody went undefeated, and we were unlucky that 3 teams went undefeated, ok done with my rant i promise!!) LSU is a very appealing job, but I don't think it is anymore appealing than another Tier-1 program. When talking about Tier 1..I think you are talking about the top 4 schools in the SEC...and top 2-3 in the Big 10...the top 3-4 from the Big 12, and the top 2 from the Pac-10. I congratulate you on your 2 SEC Championships and your national championship...but a lot of schools have had very similar 4-5 year periods and plenty of great years of recruiting but have not flat out dominated the competition. I think LSU is one of the 10-15 best jobs in America, and possibly one of the top 5. I break it down like this...If you are in Tier 1, you probably have your pick of coaches from Tier 2. (Like us taking Tuberville, ya'll taking Saban)...but I haven't seen many lateral moves among tier 1 schools. It just doesn't happen. And thats the problem I see with alot of posters, they seem to expect taking another tier one schools coach. I just don't think it is possible. This is long, but I hope it gives you a better understand of what the outside world thinks of your coaching situation.
No not really...I'd heard a rumor a while back from a VERY reliable source that Baton Rouge was looking to move in an NFL team but the powers that be in State Government shot it down because they thought New Orleans would get jealous and want one too.
Big name, schmig name LSU has managed to screw up bowl preparations for 2 fairly major programs (OK St, L'ville) and gotten another's fans all in a Tizzy (Pig U.) Petrino should have told LSU he'll talk to them after his bowl game, but he's so interested he went ahead and interviewed. So I think the program is getting its props, whatever that means, and for whatever it's worth. If you want to hire a coach who is strictly a big name, then go after "Granny" Lou Holtz (so-called b/c of his uncanny resemblance to "Granny" from the Beverly Hillbillies.) Pry Jimmy Johnson from his sailboat in South Florida and the magarita in his hand. Otherwise, let's get a young, energetic, innovative, coach, who is presently in the game. (Petrino).
The NFL guy that I would really like to have is Jeff Fisher. I have only heard his name once or twice and it is rumored that he won't be at Tennessee much longer. The Titans are 4-11 and with McNair possibly retiring, now would be a good time for him to leave (if he isn't fired). He is 46 and have spent his most career in the NFL, with the last ten years as the head coach of the Titans. If we can hire Fisher, then I could see him spending the rest of his career at LSU. What is everyone else's opinion?
Well, Florida hired Zook. Miami hired Coker. Ohio St. took Tressel out of a pansy conference. Those are/were top 5 programs. What the hell do you want? Someone out of the NFL? Carroll was seen as a bad hire by many. Stoops was a coordinator (ok, granted OU was down. Who do you expect? The Pope?
I agree that Fisher is a great coach, but I don't see Bud Adams making a move just yet, so I doubt Fisher is in the mix. He would be a great pickup though. GEAUX TIGERS
I agree with Aubie 16. We have a good program but Tubby from Auburn would have been a lateral move for him (not that I care to ahve him over anyway). Petrino would have a slight step up since Louisville is basketball country and he would do nicely here. I think if he came and Muschamp stay (don't forget, he learned from one of the best defensive coaches) we would do quite well. My problem is when I think a coach is good they turn into duds...except for Dinardo. When we hired Archer and Hallman I thougt they would do pretty good. I really thought Stovall would have worked things out but the B of S jumped the gun too quickly when he had one bad season. I wasn't sold on Saban either and I learned otherwise. That said, I think Petrino would bomb because I like him. Maybe we need Rich Rodriguez. I think he is a terrible choice but I'm usually wrong.
