I like how both MSU and Va Tech are ranked ahead of USC in total defense. Even after our O tore them apart. Still early, but you would think having the #1 D would count for something.

Thanks Hawker! Oh my Gosh, we have a lights out defense. I did not expect us to have such a huge lead this early on Defensive stats. Our offensive stats have really jumped. If we keep putting up the numbers we are we will break the top ten soon in total offense.

Something odd I found by searching around...

There are 30 undefeated teams left after 3 weeks of play. Only 8 of those teams have actually played a conference game.

Props to Boston College for starting the season with 3 conference games in a row.

    This I find amazing:

Average QB Rating for the conference
    Big 12 135.72
    Big 10 137.52
    Pac-10 135.53
    SEC 135.42

Not necessarily. Let's take a serious look at how the stats bear out where USC is concerned.

USC gave up a ton of yardage against Nebraska, almost all of it in the air including 179 in the 4th Q with Keller still in the game. But Nebraska (now rated 38 in rushing offense) had gained 528 yards rushing in it's prior two games while USC's D allowed them only 31 net on the ground. When you can't run, you have to throw.

With that in mind, Nebraska currently has the 25th rated passing offense. Va Tech, Middle Tennessee, and MSU are at 73, 82, and 112 respectively.

As for Rushing D, LSU is rated #3 with USC at 9 after only two games. Oregon St is rated #2. Does that mean OSU has a better Rushing D than LSU? Not even close but that's what can happen if you cherry pick stats or get fixated on just one set of numbers.

Games still have to be won and while it would be great to see our D improve it's stats, particularly in the secondary (running a soft zone also impacts the stats), I'm okay with how things currently stand.

    Piss poor logic.....

Offenses are only as good as a defense will let them be. Let me throw out a great example of this.

In the 2003 MNC, LSU held OU to less than 150 yards. Did that mean OU sucks at offense?

OU was 13th in offense AFTER our game. Before, they were 10th. That is with 12 other games.

Let's swing over to the horrible MTSU offense we speak of. 106 after LSU..... Without that game, they are suddenly 50th! And yes, had they gained 300 yards in the air against us, they would have the 35th passing offense in the nation. My gosh! So had they done so well in the air against us, it would have been OK since they would suddenly have a high passing offense.

See how easy it is to skew numbers early in the season? Great defensive game for one team.... The other team's defense sucks! Poor defensive showing.... Their offense ROCKS!!!

What, then, is the excuse for having the 95th passing offense? (Yet JDB is STILL a Heisman frontrunner) Nebraska has a great pass D? I'll bet Idaho's D is massively dominant!

Can't believe you short change the great USC offense...they are actually 94th - not 95th!!!
Btw, agreed w/ everything you said. It's a big point of what happened after a team get demolish by us and yet those idiot analyst don't take into account this major fact.:dis:

USC out recruits every college program period. They get to assemble the best players they want. They have two Louisiana boys, one a Heisman candidate for this year and a future Heisman candidate. To see where they rank in statistics is pretty bad. Anyone who tries to spin SC out of it is just spinning. Yes, it's all about winning games, stats don't matter, wins do. I like our chances with anyone! Trust me all our opponents look at our stats! :thumb:

You made my point for me. Stats, including who is #1 or #101 doesn't mean a dam thing unless you're winning games. You think the irish care that they have the 5th rated passing D in the country? Why does USC need an excuse for being 95th in passing offense? All that means is that USC is running the ball and doing it well. Controling the line of scrimmage, time of possession, field position and wearing down the other team is a strategy that works. Why put it in the air if you don't have to? USC's offensive strength right now is our O line and our RB's, not JDB and a crew of young and not so experienced WR's. I personally don't care if JDB wins the Heisman or not and I'm sure he feels the same way.

Keep in mind, my reply was a response to a suggestion that USC folks wouldn't want to discuss the issue.

USC folks don't want to discuss the issue! All the media hyped was how wonderful and dominating USC was of Nebraska. The week before it was all about LSU should be #1. It's all hype from the media. When blokes like me watch the games and try to figure out who's best the next logical step is look at schedules and stats. USC falls way short in the stats. Their weak schedule has strengthened some. You look at LSU's wins, schedule, stats, players, coaches and compare with USC, OU, and UF there are two teams that stand above the rest. LSU and Florida, then USC and OU. Of course that may change as the season progresses. You gotta love college
    football. :thumb:
