From the current era, I agree. Go back to Majors and before him, there are a lot there I have the upmost respect for...

    Re: <------------

Nick's defense at LSU emphasized deception with players always moving and stunting, with blitzes and fake blitzes, and with disguised coverages. It confused the hell out of quarterbacks but it was a hard defense to learn and to run. The players have to be students of the game. The cornerbacks are very hard-pressed to stick like glue in man coverage and the safeties must make multiple reads correctly.

But even when they were running Nick's defense well, it was always subject to the occasional big play breakdown from the defensive backs. It was especially vulnerable to a blocking back slipping out late down the middle for a long pass. A safety misread on the last play of the bowl game against Iowa cost LSU the game and another 10-win season in 2004.

I suspect it will take Bama well into the season to master Nick's defense and perhaps a couple of top-10 recruiting classes to man it effectively. Thats what it took at LSU.

That's precisely why I'm looking at '08 before making a legit run at the West. With Georgia (wk 4) and FSU (wk 5) I suspect we'll be looking at 3-2, 2-3 going into the 6th week. The Arkansas game (wk 3) is going to be a good barometer on the progress made by the DL and LB's.

Heck, Vandy (wk 2) with the LB's and DB's learning a new system...added to that Nickson and that crew of receivers...that very well may be a struggle.

Terry, I just made nice with you on another thread, but forgive me if, when and if this happens, I gloat!:hihi: Just a little!;) If you guys lose to Vandy, I'm not sure I will be able to contain myself!

Actually, though, I think Bama could've hung with FSU or UGA this past season. I don't know how improved those two teams will be, but I give Bama a fair shot in those games.

Since his high school days, I've always been impressed with Chris Nickson. He's got all the tools to be a great college QB. By his senior year, I expect him to be as good, if not better, than Cutler in his passing game and definitely more mobile. Add Earl Bennett to that equation and it is going to be a test on the secondary.

Have you looked at how young their roster is?

Very few Sr.'s...and I have to say I have a lot of respect for Bobby Wallace.

It's my opinion, that game will rest on how well the OL comes together under the new OL Coach, Marshall. One thing for sure, we won't be seeing the ole' "bucket step/matador" approach anymore!! :thumb:

Terry, why don't you just come on over to the Dark side, I mean purple and gold side. You have really good info on SEC football, and since you are a closet fan already...:hihi: :) Seriously, I really like your insight. I may not always agree, but we all have opinions, and yours are "usually" backed up with some facts. I do enjoy reading your posts even though I seldom respond to them.

    Signed,
