1. 'tiga hits the nail on the head here, dane.

Put the Big12 and the SEC side by side for a second and look at one side of the ball; the offense. Two different brands of football, no? Comparing one conference to another simply won't work.

    For the record:

I'm NOT saying the officiating can't improve: drastically. I am saying I find those who point to things like officiating in losses tend to be piss poor losers.

@red55 I hesitate to use the term "crooked" (while wondering if the request for records on Draft Kings, et. al. shows anything on SEC refs) although I think it's foolish to say there's no bias. The SEC has a rule that a ref can't attend a school and call their games, right? But, nothing about the same ref and where their kids go to school. That raises an eyebrow on my end...
  2. It's my opinion using stats like that don't tell the whole story. As example, you can count on there being several personal foul penalties each year when UGA and UF meet. With two, there's 30 yards tacked on to the yearly total. We're a couple of years removed from one game having what ... six, nine? Some HUGE total.

Now, it's certainly reflective of the coaching. No doubt.

Another thing that has to be taken into consideration is who is playing whom. A LSU vs Bama game is going to be called differently than a LSU vs Baylor game.

Going back to what @lsutiga said ... variables.

  3. You got that right! In an LSU vs Baylor game both teams need one foot in bounds for a reception. In a Bama vs LSU game the LSU player needs 3 feet in bounds for a reception. Also in the LSU\Baylor matchup it's legal to flag both teams for holding, not just LSU.

  4. on this we can agree
  5. I wasn't asking for any lines of correlation directly between conferences. Simply wondering if other conferences follow a similar path with teams or if they are much more scatter shot.

Besides, this entire conversation has too many variables to be able to establish anything anyway. To be anywhere near accurate we would have to examine individual refs and see how many penalties and on which teams they call them depending whaf two teams are playing. Simply posting up total penalties and yards per penalty is full of a ton of variables as well.

  6. Don't forget the spot of the ball tends to move, PF's are thrown out the window, replay must get on its knees and suck the replay officials dick to prove what can be seen with the eyes.
  7. Depends. When Florida won the National Championship in the 2006 season they were THE most penalized team in all of college football. The following year when LSU won it WE were THE most penalized team in all of college football. Depends on what kind of penalties are being assessed.

I almost posted that holding calls may be more prevalent on an offense that passes much more than runs.
  8. Perhaps you would be interested in a thread on another site that showed how Saban's LSU teams were usually penalized in the SEC about as much as Miles' LSU are; however, when Saban went to Alabama, suddenly his teams aren't heavily penalized anymore, just like Shula's teams before him.

Reflective of coaching? I don't think so.

  9. Bingo!!

  10. yeah i knew that dig was coming from him. i just let it go.

but really the constant whining about refs by every fanbase on every play is just annoying as f. unless its bama week. then its going to happen so we may as well acknowledge it.
