Still had the game recorded so I watched the final seconds again just now. Darrel went up for the shot with 3.3 seconds to go. At that time, he had one option on the play for an assist, that was Tasmin Mitchell, who was spotted up all by himself for a three in the right corner. No idea why Tasmin was so far out, since a two was all that was needed. Nonetheless, nobody was on him. Under the basket, Rolle was double teamed. It appeared to be a 3-2 zone that UConn was using. Darrel had actually outrun Tyrus and Glenn down the court. He slowed up a bit and let Davis run ahead of him at the last second. Davis split the defenders (the 3) and in the process screened one off near the free throw line. The other two went to either side of him just inside the three point line. This left Darrel wide open for a three point shot. Thomas was behind Darrel at this point, so he was not an option. Davis was doing a screen, with his back turned to Darrel. Rolle was double teamed under the goal. Tasmin was wide open, yet behind the three point line in the corner. Seeing this play again, it is obvious that it was not quite desperation. The screen that Davis did and the splitting of the defenders was very nice to watch days later. Given the choice of Darrel's wide open three or a pass out to Tasmin for his wide open three I would choose Darrel's at this point. You also have to consider the the pass takes away time that could be used for a second chance rebound basket. It is good to have a go to guy in the final seconds and Darrel has stepped up and become that guy. In the heat of the moment, I questions Darrel's choice of making that shot. I was wrong to do so! If that shot had fallen, we would be applauding Brady and the players for running that play so well. We should be doing that anyway. :bball: :bball: :tigerhead :tigerhead
Nice analysis. I also rewatched the highlights on the Inside Basketball show. Darrell took the shot with time, but he was open and is a 43% three point shooter. With 3+ seconds left, you also leave yourself the possibility of a tip. But, only Davis was under the goal and had blocked out. Tyrus didn't hustle to get back. The ball bounced a little high and that was unfortunately not a put back opportunity. Not a bad shot when Jim Calhoun also says it was a good look (of course, he won the game). Let's try to support our one senior, and someone who SHOULD go down in LSU history as one of our most quietly productive guys in history. This team would be in serious trouble were it not for D.Mitch.
Dream on 99. Brady is persona non grata to most here and a Final Four appearance would still generate criticism. That's just the way it is.
i dont argue shooting it so soon... We have Tyrus Thomas who so often gets the board and throws it back in... if you miss, we still can potentially put them on the line and hope for 1 last prayer, too... it is all in the past, and because it didn't work, the front runners here won't like it, but they'll come around and pretend like they were on the bandwagon all season long when we make our usual SEC run
