Deceks7, Are you even sure you know what you mean? I definitely don't. It's true, the real victims were those killed and their families. But I don't think you realize the scope of the situation. I agree that people hollering, "Go Hoakies" and all of this kind of stuff is a little strange when people have just died, etc. I think that mostly comes from people who probably didn't have a close friend, etc. killed in the incident and have this attitude of moving on and being happy college students by the end of the week. I don't think they realize that it's not a realistic option for someone who has lost someone very close to them. Many people try to kind of brush death away by thinking positive, but it's not reality. But it is a VT tradgedy as well. I mean, it happened in a building where thousands of VT students go everyday. About 50 VT students were shot. No telling how many VT students are filled with grief over losing good friends. Then these Tech teachers died who have taught and impacted tons of VT students over the years. Thousands of students were involved in a scary situation where many of them were probably questioning whether they were going to be the one to get shot by some mad person on their campus. Those students will walk around everyday at that campus and be reminded of those images they saw on T.V. of people being carried out, etc. It's sort of like living in a house where someone was killed. I don't care how you look at it, it was a VT tragedy as well because of the wide effect it will have on them. Of course a good bit of the story will be about VT, they were all VT students and professors! Also, the reaction from the VT officials is a major point of concern and debate. But I'll tell you that I already know a lot about some of the students that were killed and the media covered that a bunch today and probably will even more as more victims are identified and if any of the parents want to talk. By the way, I seriously doubt I'll boo VT when they appear unless they come out and moon Mike the Tiger or something. The only thing I can predict about that game is that if Les goes with that dumb punt formation we use, Beamer's team might break a record for blocked punts.
Great post, LSU fans do not have to cheer for them the entire game, but I think it would be great to respect them before the game.
I understand the scope of the situation. I understand that in many parts of the world this is a daily event. This doesn't minimize the grief of those that lost loved ones, it means this is not unique. This week one will know the victims, next week one will remember that this happened at VT, in 3 weeks one won't give it a passing thought. The labels make it too easy to ignore the individual horror and those on the periphery to engage in self-aggrandizement. Let's just have a pep rally when the next airliner crashes. I will reserve future comments on this for the Round Table, this is a football forum, not a philosophical one. Thanks
I have to admit, I was a LOT more excited about whipping the Hokies prior to two days ago. Now, this makes football seem small--just like what happened post Katrina when our whole season was out of whack, but then again, so were the lives of everyone in south Louisiana. I won't be at the game (I had planned to be, but since Texas had to move our school start date to around Labor Day, it won't be feasible for me or my daughter to miss school so close to the start of school). However, I hope the LSU fans show respect for VT (because I think it IS a tragedy for everyone at the school, as well as alumni; think how we'd feel if it was LSU or Dececks if it was Auburn), but I then want our football team to rip Beamer and his squad apart (and, yes, I hope Coach Miles ditches to bad punt formation or Beamer Ball will have a field day). Does anyone else think College Gameday will make this game their location that day? I think it was possible before this and probable now.
I actually agree with Deceks on this one. I won't boo them (I don't boo any teams in TS) but I certainly won't cheer for them. With all due respect to the school and its students, this will be a football game that could very well have serious implications as to who plays in the NC come January. VT can be honored in other ways. UT sure as fu<k didn't care about LSU on that fateful monday night.
I think there is a great possibility of that. However, someone who isn't as lazy as I am should look up who else is playing that weekend.
That's a great idea. But I'm too lazy to do it... I think we'll both get the nod either way. Both teams are projected top 10 teams, Gameday hasn't been to LSU since Katrina (though they'd planned to), and the media cannot back off milking a good story (which is sometimes unfortunate.)
It's a long time until September and we shouldn't let our present grief change the Tiger gameday experience. VT fans will be welcomed to some fine tailgate food. The VT team will get a big hand. There will be a moment of silence before the game to commemorate the fallen students and then . . . we should pay VT the respect of treating them the way we treat every other opponent. It's a friggin football game, not a memorial service. We're not going to give those guys the game to make them feel better. And everybody better have it strapped on for a meeting between two top ten teams. This is going to be kind of a grudge match, guys. The VT fans were pretty rude to a beaten LSU team in Blacksburg in 2002, chanting on National TV, "OVER-RATED, OVER-RATED". Then they crawfished out of a return trip the next year, when we won the :crystal: . Now they have to come to our place for the return game and they deserve the full, loud, rowdy Tiger Stadium experience.
pretty similar to all the people that stood on street corners after 911 with old glory yelling stuff.
Not that one really has anything to do with the other except that reading this thread reminded me of 1999 when A&M had the tragic bonfire collapse that killed a bunch of students. There was talk of cancelling the A&M/Texas game but they decided to play it. I think the game was about a week after the accident. Texas went to Collie Station ranked in the top 10, maybe top 5, I don't remember. A&M was unranked. Texas lost.
