From what I understand, other than evaporation, the only way to get water out of New Orleans is by pumping it out. I just talked to a guy who works in my building here in Lafayette. He has family in from New Orleans including three school age children. He told me that initially the family was in denial about how long it would be b4 they could return to NOLA. However, after seeing all the pictures today and talking to friends and contacts , have enrolled their children in a private school here. What a mess ... looting, bodies floating in the 9th Ward, rising water, evacuations, rescues, cops being shot, no electricity, no water, marshal law, people dead in their attics ... unfortunately it is the City That Care Forgot.
I can't remember where I heard this today, or what Parish was being referred to, but the public schools in one of the Parishes will not start until Dec. 1 now. When you start thinking about the full ramifications of this, it gets really overwhelming really fast.
When I heard the statement that the Mississippi River had "RECLAIMED" Plaquimines(SP) parish, I had no idea how to process that. To thing that there is 'NOTHING' left down there is Surreal
again I will not lose focus, but what does this do to HS football? I guess the whole season is cancelled? We do need to recruit... A lot of young men may miss out on scholarships
yeah a lot of schools in orleans parish won't open again til december. Some in the 9th ward won't open again maybe till next year. As far as ho to get the water out, One the plans is to wait till the lake and river go down some and then punch holes all along the levee and allow alot of the water to flow out. Then they will pump the rest out.
There is also a shelter in the Lake Charles Civic Center. It is already housing 1800 people from New Orleans and the outlying areas. The local news has already sent the call out to help these people, and the locals have responded admirably. If anyone cares to help, they are calling for bottled water, canned goods, diapers, baby wipes, and board games.
