BLACKSBURG, Va. — One person was reportedly killed and as many as 17 people are being treated for gunshot wounds after at least one gunman opened fire at the Virginia Tech University campus in Blacksburg, according to officials.

A state government official told The Associated Press that at least one person was killed in a shooting incident at the West Ambler Johnston residence hall early Monday morning.

Judith Chambers, a spokeswoman at Montgomery Regional Hospital, where the injured were taken, told FOX News that 17 individuals from the college are being treated for gunshot wounds and other injuries. The conditions vary and some are in surgery, she said.

School officials planned a noon EDT press conference Monday.

"Police have one shooter in custody and as part of routine police procedure, they continue to search for a second shooter," the school's Web site read Monday. "All people in university buildings are required to stay inside until further notice. All entrances to campus are closed."

On CNN they have a video where someone caught the sound of the gunfire on a cellphone. There was like 2-3 second pauses between each shot. So the gunman was probably just walking around and shooting anyone who he saw. Unless it was the police gunfire he captured. They didn't specify.

    Very sad.

This makes me scared because this is possible anywhere, at any time. I'm not for repealing the Second Amendment or anything, but what can be done to control firearms aside from licenses and the background checks already in place?

    22 dead... wow. That's just mind-numbing.

A friend of mine is a V-Tech alum and she said that it's very common for people to "go crazy" around final exam time. I know more details will come out later, but I cant help but wonder if this was the cause of an overly stressed student. Whatever the reason there is no excuse. This, like Columbine or the Sniper, is a sensless act by a coward. BTW- Columbine happened 8 years ago this week (April 20, 1999)

College campuses are so open and there is such easy acess to the buildings. After 911 I became more aware of that fact while sitting in large classrooms (Lockett basement) filled with a bunch of strangers. It's really scary.

I'm so sorry for all of the victims and their famlies. The nation will be praying for you.
