IRVING--T.J. Barber rushed for 204 yards and two touchdowns as Midland rallied from an early deficit to defeat Tyler Lee, 24-14, in a Class 5A Division I state semifinal at Texas Stadium. Midland (12-2), making its first playoff appearance since 1951, advances to play Converse Judson (13-1) next week for the state title. The game is tentatively set for noon Saturday at the Alamodome in San Antonio. Barber’s emergence in the second quarter helped jump start a Midland offense that saw its passing game stymied by the Lee defense. His 13-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter began a string of 17 unanswered points. Tyler Lee (10-4) stayed close thanks to the arm of quarterback Matt Flynn, who passed for 222 yards on 14-of-21 completions, including a first-quarter touchdown. But the Midland defense stiffened as the game progressed, allowing just two yards and no first downs in the third quarter. Lee trimmed a 10-point deficit to 17-14 on a Keondra Smith scoring plunge early in the fourth quarter. But Midland responded with a 66-yard drive that consumed almost six minutes, capped by a 9-yard Barber touchdown. Lee had its final scoring chance thwarted by the game’s only turnover, as Flynn was sacked and fumbled at the Midland 40 with under two minutes left. Barber’s workhorse effort accounted for almost 75 percent of his team’s yardage, as he carried on more than half of Midland’s plays. Quarterback Ryan Rowland, meanwhile, who accounted for 292 total yards in a quarterfinal win over Arlington Lamar, was limited to just 52 yards passing on six completions.
