One of our Hawkeye Forum posters posted some interesting stuff on the NCAA Tourney: It's been 26 years (1979) since the NCAA expanded the field to 40 teams, then to 64 in 1985. In that period, the following: 1) There have been 18 different champions. 2) Of the 334 Division I members, only 46 have ever played in the Final Four. 3) Only 22 teams have been to the Final Four more than once. 4) The winner of LSU/Texas will be the 23rd. 5) Memphis has a chance to be the 24th. Teams that have been to the Final Four since 1979: SEC: Fla, Ky, Miss St, Ark, LSU, Ga ACC: UNC, Duke, GT, Md, Vir, NC St Big 12: Ok St, Tx, Kansas, Okla PAC 10: Az, Stanford, UCLA Old MVC: Lou, Marq, Cincy, DePaul Big East: Uconn, Syr, Seton Hall, Prov, St John, G'town, Nova Big Ten: Ill, MSU, Ind, Wisc, OSU, Minn, Mich, Iowa, Purdue Others: Umass, UNLV, Penn, Houston, Ind St, Utah, Memphis TO ALL READERS: Please note the absence of Wake Forest. Please don't tell Billy Packer. He remembers them being there just yesterday. So, LSU, it's time to make yourself a little history here!! Good Luck!!
Well, actually, he said since 79 and since 85, so I'm not exactly clear one which time frame we are talking about here...
Sorry, guys... I cut and pasted most of that... assumed it was totally accurate, as that particular poster is usually very good. It appears the only error he made was with LSU... go figure. My bad.
