The thing that makes all of this worse for me is that this was nowhere near Auburn's best performance. They are known for getting very hot on offense, and they never really got hot. They shot 41% and hit 2-16 from behind the arc. It's just confusing. I hate the "peaking early" theory, and I hate the "complacency" theory for winning it early. You know they aren't in the locker room saying, "Well, we still won the SEC." After Wednesday I was expecting this team to come out pissed off and play lights-out.
LSU is in. The question is how much their seeding has been hurt. Had they powered to a 15-1 SEC season and won the SEC tourney, then I could see them at a #4. Now, it will be either #6 or #7. LSU is WAY OFF the bubble. They clinched a tournament bid about 5 or 6 games ago. EDIT: OOPS! I didn't realize you were talking about Auburn, Deceks7. Sorry about that! As far as Auburn is concerned, I think they made a great case for themselves recently, and I expect them to get a bid.
I hope we can still grab a 5-seed. I would be more comfortable playing a 12-seed mid-major conference winner over an 11-seed the likes of an Auburn or Florida.
If we win the tourney we'll get a good seed. If Trent Johnson is the coach we think, this was not representative of what we'll see in the postseason. If we finish weak, Trent Johnson's stock will drop severely.
So, can we just pretend this week didn't happen for the men's team? Florida beat Kentucky at home, so they take the 3-seed. So (E4) Kentucky is going to play the W5-seed on Thursday, and we will play the winner on Friday. Here's what is going on for the W5-seed: Miss. State (8-7) is up by 3 on Ole Miss (7-8) with 5 left to play in the game. Bama (6-9) plays Tennessee tomorrow. If Ole Miss wins or Bama loses, Bama gets the 5-seed. Bama holds the tiebreaker over Ole Miss if both finish 7-9. An Ole Miss win and a Bama loss bumps them up to the 3-seed. So, 3-seed: MSU/Ole Miss 4-seed: Bama/MSU/Ole Miss 5-seed: Bama/Ole Miss Edit: Miss State is up by 6 with 1:30 to go. Assuming they hang on, Bama's game tomorrow vs. Tennessee determines the W4-seed. Bama wins: Kentucky vs. Ole Miss Bama loses: Kentucky vs. Bama
From your very classy coach (and I know this was a poorly officiated game, we probably had the sorriest collection of refs in the SEC there today, that makes this even more meaningful) LSU Trent Johnson on the Auburn Tigers after Auburn's win today: "We've had a lot of respect for Auburn all year long. I don't think there is anybody in our league, maybe not anybody in the country that has played as good of basketball as they have in the last 45 days to two months. "Everybody talks about Kentucky and Florida and some other teams in this league being bubble teams and all that, and you don't ever hear Auburn's name in the mix. I've been through my share of teams and been in my share of postseason experiences. That is an NCAA tournament caliber team. They've given us as tough of a matchup as anybody has given us all year long."
Keep in mind that they had illness and injuries they were battling this week and this scenario was not necessarily unexpected, i.e. the last two losses. They will perk up for the SEC-T and still end up with a seeding in the 4-5 range for the NCAAs, I believe. I expect them to either win the SEC-T or at least get to Championship game. Kudos to AUB - they have been hot lately, although I agree with your other post that they were not necessarily hot in this game.
Auburn has finally found their identity .... and they've been on a hot streak as a result. It was also the final home game for our starting seniors, so they were highly motivated with LSU coming-in to BEC. It was wierd the way it played out. Given the way LSU finished-out the first half, I really thought they'd be bringin' it in the second half. Auburn was a lot busier than normal on defense, but I was still surpised at LSU's total points.
At some point during the telecast the announcers said our RPI is #35...and that was before yesterday's loss. Unless we win the SECT, I don't see us as better than an 8 seed.
