Think about it. The running backs/receivers run the ball to achieve a first down. Then the officials in charge of the markers that are placed at the line of scrimmage and show the 10 yards a team have to advance down the field to achieve a first down, pick the markers up and MOVE THE CHAINS. So logically, the offensive players are part of a "chain gang" because it's their job to achieve the yardage so the officials have to move the chains.:wink:
