I thought that was his point though. I thought he meant that the players were not playing according to the scheme as closely (or "tightly") as the coaches would have preferred. Perhaps we've just got a different version of Saban. Not directly obtuse, but obtuse because his comments can be interpreted different ways.
I thought he mneant that if the players had played the way they were supposed to play that we would have had much more success defensing the passing game.
If it was suppose to be played much tighter how come after 60 friggen minutes is wasn't. Unless he has other players coming in the next two weeks the guys we had Saturday will still be the ones playing. So what changes are to be expected. Understanding the scheme, different players or actually a coach telling a player where in the world to line up i this simplified no blitz defense.
The encouraging thing about the defense is that, while the pass rush was non-existant, the run-D was pretty damn good. The ASU running backs broke a couple decent runs (mainly on draws when the D was looking for the pass), but were stuffed for the most part. the SEC, with the exception of Flordia and probably now USC, is a run-first conference. UT isnt going to come to baton rouge and thrwo the ball 50 times. If BP can shore up the pass-D by time florida rolls into town, we should be ok.
Thanks MD! I said it before and I'll say it again...LSU won the game! Won the game on the road, against a Top 15 team that scored 60+ points the week before. LSU will not face another quarterback, with maybe the exception of Chris Leak, who will be as good or throw as much as Sam Keller. Jay Cutler is good but doesn't have the personnel that ASU has on the O-line or at TE or WR. I honestly don't believe that any other SEC QB will put up Keller-like numbers against LSU. And I'm not ready to equate Bo Pelini with Lou Tepper.
Makes sense. We pick off those two passes, and that's two ASU drives halted. And given the way we were starting to execute on offense (both running and passing) I could see us coming up with some more points off those TO's. It's encouraging to see that Miles and staff recognize our discomfort, and at least acknowledged that they will improve.
And even if Florida comes out passing like ASU did, we've already showed that we can fight back and play in a "shoot-out". We definately have the horses on offense to outscore opponents. I'd be pleased if we keep the more balanced teams at bay, and at the least, if we're going to give up some yardage vs heavy passing teams, we need our offense to be clicking.
That's where I'm coming from. If the coaches "would have preferred" that the corners play tighter, you would think that at some point during the game they would have. As it turned out, they didn't close the gaps until the last series, when teams normally spread out into a prevent. Anyway, it worked. We won.
