1. Yes, they generally do. This one cat, however, didn't have a nickname. One of my co-worker's husband's was the kid's band director.

    I'm having a really rough time saying Adolf's name this year. His parents are African immigrants. Is it possible they don't know about the name?

    It's five weeks in, I just take a deep breath and call on "Adolf" now. Inward cringe be damned.
  6. When in doubt, shorten it. There was a really funny guy from Iran in one of my freshman college classes. He didn't take anything seriously including his name, Mohammed. He went by Moe.

    Call him 'Dolf. I bet Dolf Lundgren was once an Adolf.

    Hell when I was a D.I. every Asian kid that came through was known as "hop-sing" regardless of what his name was.
