I agree (about the shortcomings of the system I outlined). I would imagine that additional factors (margin of victory maybe, offensive/defensive stats, etc.) could be calculated either directly into the points system, or used to break any ties. I just have to think that if we put enough smart people together, give them 6 months to come up with the most logical, unbiased, system they can come up with without using human polls, we'd have a better system than what we have now.
I'm definitely with you when it comes to minimizing or even eliminating people mucking up the polls. Honestly, I'd love to know how the current computer rankings are generated i.e., what they take into account.
