This is from someone who spoke with Bill Oliver at length last wednesday night on the phone. Spurrier did try to hire Bill Oliver last year but he hasn't spoken to him since last february. I don't think we get Spurrier or Oliver.
hey Terry, i know you from tidefans.com, do you think this saban thing is serious or just wishful thinking?
There's been contact...but, I don't have anything I can share that say's it is going to happen. Look at it this way. I don't feel there will be an announcement before Dec. 4. If there is one after that, it's a college coach. If we don't hear one then, it's NFL. I wish I could share more, and like Bayou, we just can't/won't...even on our own board.
If Bama offered Saban the HC job, they must have been smoking some funny cigarettes if they thought just for a second Saban would leave his situation at Miami for Bama. It just shows you how out-of-touch with reality the Bama people are. And I have more news for you: no way Spurrier is leaving SC for Bama. Miami - maybe, but not Bama. Bama officials need to start looking for someone they can reasonably expect to jump at the opportunity to coach in Tuscaloosa. Jimbo Fisher or Bo Pelini would be good choices, although I hope neither receive offers. They might also want to look at head coaches from conferences that don't have the recruiting base the SEC does. Good examples would be Louisville (although if Petrino was not interested in LSU a couple of years ago, I doubt if he would be interested in Alabama) and Wake Forest.
Coaches like Saban want to compete and win at the highest level. Looking at his track record proves that. With all due respect to those in the know about this situation, but I just don't see Saban leaving the NFL for another college job unless the Dolphins fire him or he gets some kind of record deal - and I'm not talking one dollar more than the current highest paid coach.
