Casey, that's what I hated for the year I was a journalism major. I wanted to deviate too much from "acceptable" wording for articles. I became an English major instead, teaching English. But--I'm a part-time community columnist for The Dallas Morning News. Being a columnist is definitely the way to go if you want some creative freedom in journalism.
