BATON ROUGE -- Rahim Alem wiggles the mouse, awaking his personal computer, bringing to light the disturbing image he chose for desktop wallpaper.

On the screen, a starving Sudanese child is left alone against the barren landscape. His stomach is bloated. His rib cage is visible. His arms are weak and thin. In the near background, Alem points to a blurry object difficult to distinguish because it's somewhat hidden behind the rows of computer icons.

It's a hawk, he says, waiting for the child to die.
