hawkbait, I've watched the final play maybe 20 times today (I know, kinda pathetic), and the call could have went either way... I can certainly empathize with LSU fans that there was a block in the back... it was subtle, but probably an illegal block... with that said, I am like most football fans, and don't want to see such a great game decided by the refs so a no-call was appropriate IMHO.... The bottom line is it was a blown coverage, a fantastic throw under the most extreme d0-or-die situation, and a great catch.... both sides should be proud of our players... neither side left ANYTHING on the field...
I still believe the Tigers were the more talented team although the coaches and the players didn't bring it on this day. Just my opinion....... :thumb:
I think it is pretty obvious that this game was a classic case of the most talented team not winning. Iowa is a good team, but no way could they beat UGA Aubarn or Tenn. I would put them right with Florida talentwise. Iowa fans don't understand that we lost the Auburn game by 1 point because of a penalty that has been not called on so many extra points this season. Now we get it the other way and get a no call on a penalty that could go either way. Now I know how Florida felt after the Tennessee game. I don't know if this has happened before to Iowa, but judging by the fans response, except Florida Hawk, they can't really relate. Win with class and good luck next year. I already feel the effects of ad nauseum from this discussion.
To that a team that beat LSU would not be able to beat UGA, AU or UT is laughable. That's like saying LSU could not beat them either.
Hotdog..... Tenn lost to a less than average Notre Dame team AT HOME, late in the season... oh, never mind... your warped sense of football reality is what's causing your ad nauseum. Did you watch any of the bowl games? If you did, it's pretty obvious that there are many good teams in the different conferences. We understand your game against Auburn. Good grief, man, I watched it with my son who graduated from Auburn. You guys played well, but lost. Things happen!! We had five turnovers against Michigan and lost. Yeah, we'd like them back, too. Nice to know you have to be an LSU fan "to relate". Amazing comment from someone who thinks he knows football.
GoldenGirl and HotDog... I certainly understand your opinion that LSU has more "talent" than Iowa... but what is the true definition of talent? Physical talent? Mental talent? Desire? Intangibles? I didn't play D1 FB, but I did play D3 ball (back in the mid-late 80's). In my 16 years playing organized football I saw many different types of talent... This doesn't make me anymore of an expert, just a person with an educated opinion... IMHO there is a distinct difference between a "great football PLAYER" and a "great athlete" Iowa has some great athletes for sure, LSU just has more of them. LSU definitely has some great football PLAYERS, but my opinion is that Iowa has more at this point in time. Why? Because we were forced to... Iowa would most definitely take better athletes, but we have recruiting challenges that LSU will never have to face. Iowa currently is attracting Top-10 level athletes, which is great... This will change the makeup of our team, and hopefully our staff still develops this talent into PLAYERS... What does all of this mean? Your assumptions that UGA, Auburn, and Tenn. could definitely beat Iowa simply because they have "more talent" doesn't hold up to history. Based on recent NFL drafts, Miami should have won every game by 20+ if it is only based on "talent". Why did Iowa look pretty good against LSU? 1. Just look at the defensive speed of Iowa and you can see that the "physical talent" is closer to LSU than most people think. 2. Many of the current Iowa players came in less-heralded with a chip on their shoulder... They were forced to work and train harder than many of the "blue chippers" who have more raw skills coming in. The upside of the Iowa players is many times better, meaning the end-results that we put on the field are damn close to the "elite talent" schools.... and our guys are a bit hungrier and more appreciative because of their tougher journey... 3. Coaching. I'm not saying Iowa has better coaching, but we do have the exact right coaches for our players and gameplan... That wasn't by accident. Ferentz went and got D-Coord Norm Parker from Vandy when he came in because his STYLE of play matched his own philospophy (and Vandy led the SEC in defense). I know this is (very) long and sounds a bit corny (pardon the pun), but I am so sick of fans (including many of our own) thinking that when the "less talented" team wins it is a fluke.... The best FOOTBALL PLAYERS usually win... Iowa is 30-7 in the last 3 years, and many of those wins were against teams that supposedly had "more talent"... after a while, Iowa winning is not a fluke... Our PLAYERS are just often better... Good luck to the Tigers... I have a solidified 100% respect for the program, fans, and players...
The team with the most talent is not always the best team, I think LSU is the more talented team but the best team won.
