Well, . . . how many? I'd like to see it. Both safety and fuel efficient standards have been raised regularly for many decades. Who says fuel efficiency has been put ahead of safety?

Because they have it and we don't. World reserves are being depleted at an alarming rate. America simply doesn't have enough oil to be independent, it's a pipe dream.

Furthermore in 50-100 years when supplies get really tight, oil is going to become unbelievably expensive. Strategically, it makes sense to deplete foreign oil reserves while the price is relatively cheap and preserve our dwindling reserves for the future when oil is almost unaffordable.

Fuel efficiency standards began in the 1970's, you know, after the Arab Oil Embargo. It was a strategic move designed to lessen our dependency on imported oil . . . exactly what you advocate.

seems to me that is the biggest upside. put aside the fact that is one of the things i looked for when buying a new vehicle. while i wasnt going prius, i was trying to find a good compromise, and wasnt going hummer on the other end of the scale.

but oil reserves are not unlimited. some day they will run out. it is in our best interest to make them last as long as possible without having to at the same time depend on imported oil. those of us that were alive in the 70's remember the gas lines. or stations running out of gas. and the skyrocketing prices. i dont think our economy could withstand an embargo right now. anything we can do long term in case one happened, especially in an economic downturn such as this, has got to be done.

to me its not about protecting the environment or my individual pocketbook. but protecting our interests as a nation by becoming more dependent on ourselves in that area.

MM, One of the reasons why you might not have seen a thread yet was that the Administration had imposed a press leak moratorium on this topic this this morning (or late last night.) Also you get up want to damned early.

exactly, those bs talking points and scare tactics like socialist and marxist dont mean a thing to me because not a single person here has made the link based on facts and honesty with this administration.
Folks can save that for the ignorant ones and save the hypocrisy for their dinner tables.
If a republican made this move, there would confetti flying out of the azzes of most here.
