Incorrect. They could not have amnestied perkins at the time Hardens contract was up. They only had the option to do that at the end of this year and didn't do it. They also could not have offered Harden a max contract because they already had KD and Westbrook on max contracts and the CBA only allows 2 and those are the two so no, they couldn't have done that. The money they offered Harden 53 mil I think it was, would have put them well into the luxury tax or at least as far as they were willing to go and he didn't take it. The sad part is he wanted to stay in OKC and was shocked when he found out he was traded. Again, I wish he was still here, he is needed and the chemistry he had with the team is something that is missed. OKC is a very small market, probably the smallest so they don't have a lot of money to play with. I don't fault/blame them for what they did with Harden, they tried, did their best and he balked. There is nothing anyone can do about that, he wanted more money and good for him. Where they fucked up was giving so much money to Perkins that there were unable to keep Marin or do anything in free agency.
The hope is they do this at the end of this year when it is only an 8 mil amnesty vs. a 17mil. The better Steven Adams gets the more likely this will be but who knows.
They didnt have to trade harden til the end of the season anyhow. They would have had time to work on him and get something done. But they underestimated his value as shown by signing ibaka. Should have never let him go whatever that entailed. But ibaka is a great defender. They had no easy choice. Still, you got to figure this shit out beforehand. I'd have dumped Westbrook but that makes me an idiot.
There are still a lot of Westbrook haters here but his deal was done long before Hardens. True, they could have held on to him but the price would have only gone up and they still owed Perkins money they should never have agreed to pay him. That goof is the key to all of this as I have said all along.
The end result is all that matters. They shoulda figured that shit out before pissing away Durants prime years. Which they likely have done.
Thats not by design its the skill set of the future and current big men, point guards are just better right now, this trend will end in 8 years.
meanwhile, my Pistons lost a tough one to the Grizz in overtime because we cant keep our head out of our asses.
