Maybe it is illegal now. Our coach always notified the refs before using a trick play so no bogus calls occured. Your refs might have just been surprised.

I beleive you have to advance at least as far onto the field as the numbers (yard-markers). I saw it called in a college game once. Of course the ref was wrong, because the guy never actually left the field after the previous play, but you get the idea of the ruling.

I think it was actually worded as an illegal subtitution, because the player didn't "check-in". Which like I said turned out to be in-correct, and the play legal the way they ran it.

I think you are right. I now remember a huddle up or timeout on the sideline where we made sure the player hiding never stepped foot off the field. We never made a sub to do the play.

When I was coaching back in the 90s we ran a very similar play. For us, the two keys were 1) informing the refs before the game that it might show up; and 2) making sure the player hiding out near the sideline was in the huddle when it broke. Our particular version called for at least two or three guys to sub in (but not the hide out, he stayed on the field). Then when the huddle broke myself or another one of the coaches -- standing BEHIND the line of scrimmage -- would go nuts yelling at the hide out that he wasn't supposed to be on the field and needed to leave. He would run over to us, staying on the field, while we "chewed" him out. At the snap we would say "turn" and the ball would be right there and off he went.

Another nifty little basketball play I stole from some HS when they showed the clip on ESPN. Inbounding the ball under your opponent's basket (the one you score in). Basic box formation with one player on each block and one on each free throw line elbow. Player inbounding slaps the ball. Player on box opposite him drops to all fours and starts barking like a dog. Everybody turns to look at the barker. Inbounder flips to the guy right in front of him who scores easy lay up. It worked about one every three years. We called it Junkyard.

As a coach, I despise trick plays... It makes the hard work of the players with a moment of gimmickry
