If a team is playing better than anybody else at the end of the season and have enough wins to qualify for a playoff they should get the chance to try to win it all. Nobody was playing any better that the 2001 LSU Tigers at the very end of the season with the possible exception of Miami but LSU had 3 early season losses. If a playoff had existed LSU would have come in first or second. With a playoff teams like USC that play in a crappy conference and have a total creampuff schedule wouldn't get an automatic free ride to a one game bowl shot for all the marbles. They would have to earn it. I was looking through the Advocate preseason football guide the other day and there was an article about the 1974 Tara High School team. Their star running back, Tommy Calandro was injured in the early season and they finished the regular season 4-5-1 but the mangaged to make the playoffs and then went all the way and won the state championship.
I just can't agree. College football is different than HS and the NFL. I have no problem with either HS and the NFL, but I enjoy college football because of it's quirks. It takes a special season to win the NC, and I don't like the idea of rewarding hot teams at the end of the year with mulitple losses for a chance at the NC. It's not that your point is not good, in fact it is dead on correct. In all other organized football leagues, the hotter teams at the end of the year are rewarded with a chance to win the entire thing. I just like the season long playoff process, and how each game is important. College football would change in a major way if a playoff is instituted . . . it would reflect college basketball and I don't think that would be the best way to determine a champ. Let's just agree to disagree. I like the current system, you like a playoff format. :thumb:
I believe that because of the sooner lose in their CG last year and the following stink with the cry babies in california, the BCS changed the rules and stated that if you don't win your conference championship, then you can't play for the title.
I used to think playoffs would be a good thing, but they would take away from that win every game mentality. I hate that other sports don't feel they need to win every game - only enough to make playoffs. I love college football and the fact that each and every game is so important. It's what keeps the stands full and the crowd excited.
