First Game or Not, If the system is so simple and the players don't need to think much after breaking the huddle, why are so many players out of position? Our guys are smart enough to learn Saban's defense, but have a difficult time learning a "simplier" system. Something doesn't add up.
Learning the new system is one thing. Poor execution is another. Rome wasn't built in a day and you can't (at least IMO) expect perfect execution after one game. Now if we stink up the joint against the Vols in nine days it's another story.
Tenn. pass game is good, but not great. It will be a good test to see if this system works against a solid SEC team. If they stink up the Tenn game then it's a pretty good bet the system does not work. There will be two weeks to look at film and make adjustments, that should players like ours time enough to get the system.
Based on what I saw LSU do against ASU, and with Pellini saying that nothing will change, teams with very good TEs and quality tailbacks are going to make it very tough on LSU
With all due respect, what else would anyone else think he would say? That his defensive philosophy stinks??? Of course Pelini will speak highly of his trade--and say things like "it's a proven system" and "it works". After just one game, if he came out, reguardless of what any of us think, and said, "my schemeing stinks", that wouldn't look good to the players who might then start giving up on it should they get the feeling that it's pointless. I just hope that his "system" looks better the next time around. I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt, after blasting him hard on Saturday night and Sunday morning. I'll settle down and see if his predictions come true....
Very true. But remember: "Fool me once, shame on you....Fool me twice, shame on me." I'll support his scheme for another game but if it turns out like last week, then I can't say that I will continue to beleive in his system. But, like I said, right now, he has my support.
I would like to see Pelini's defensive statistics vs teams from pass-first conferences. It's one thing to boast a defense that works in certain conferences (i.e. conferences that either run-first like the Big Ten and Big XII or conferences that are more balanced like the SEC and ACC). No doubt his track record indicates that he has success--but he hasn't coached in a conference that passes first like the PAC-10. Wonder if that is the reason for USC's ability to march up and down on OU??? Having a scheme geared towards your conference is good--but when they can do little to stop teams from other conferences, is that really good?? Considering that any bowl game we go to would be against someone outside of the SEC....and if it's Rose Bowl, and we face USC, I want to have a defensive scheme that is going to be able to compete.
