Oh I completely agree that he has brought a lot of it upon himself. He got so much press because of how he tried to turn this into a circus. In no way do I think he is completely innocent in all of this, nor do I think he is a 'model citizen'. But I do think this particular quote is so far off that I do feel a little sorry for him. But now that I think about it, you are probably right that the kids on the team know enough about the media to know not to read too much into it.
