With all due respect, that's a conversation with no correct reply for either side. If it was meaningless in 2003, then flaunting it today will earn the response you got. If it's good enough to do some joking, then clearly it had some meaning back then. These same writers are really the nexus of the enmity between the two fan bases and by their votes continue to stoke the fire and keep themselves relevant.
I was going to post something on the same line. I personally don't care that the AP voted us No. 1. The AP is irrelevant.
I think you'll find a mix from USC fans and since I spend most of my time with or talking to them, I have a decent idea of the current sentiments. On the shuttle back to our car after the game Saturday, ALL of those I was riding with were prepared and in agreement for LSU to grab the #1 spot. NONE of us even discussed 2003. Some USC fans are definitely still wrapped up in the 2003 issue but the majority are far more concerned with what happens this season and know that while having a #1 AP ranking is "nice" it doesn't mean much in terms of getting to NOLA in January.
No way! No respect! I'm correct! We just kid back and forth anyway. Oddly enough I got into a similar AP conversation while booking a flight back in 2003. Who knew, you book a flight over the phone and you end up talking ball with a random USC fan.
Now that is something I'd like to see a link to. A paper, a magazine, a youtube, anything. I'm as guilty of putting my C&G glasses on at times as any other rabid fan but I remember PC making the exact same comments in 2003.....that he had no control over the votes or the process and that we just needed to handle our business.
Was "the system" valid when it allowed USC to play and beat Oklahoma ? Carroll, while not expressing anger, said it was obvious the BCS formula didn't work. "It's a system designed by really smart people that appears not to be valid. It's clear to me that we're the No. 1 team in the country, according to the people who choose that." http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/pac10/2003-12-07-usc-title-talk_x.htm
It is a shame that we did not get to play USC in 2003. I don't care what we are ranked now, I just want a shot at USC at the end of the year. The system is what it is due to the Big 10 resisting the playoff system. The SEC is more than prepared to play whoever. In 04, Auburn went undefeated and got screwed. USC and the national press could not take it when it was voted out of the NC game. Good luck to USC the rest of the way and God willing we will see you in the DOME.
Well, I wonder if the AP Poll will go the way of the UPI Poll in a few more seasons. The AP may regret pulling out of the BCS. ldskule: ldskule: ldskule: ldskule: ldskule:
