My favorite JL Smith moment was when he was the HC at Mich St and he told he halftime reporter very candidly that the players were doing well "but the damn coaches are screwing it up." Oh, it was classic. I hope he's got a few gems for us this year.
You can't install brand new schemes, especially offense, coaching philosophies, etc., right after the spring game, and keep any sense of continuity, especially with the fanbase being the way they are. They HAD to hire someone very familiar and relatively close to the program.
The best part of reading that was the unintentional comedy on the side: Chris Low says Smith's hiring brings stability to an Arkansas program that has most of the pieces in place to win its first SEC crown next season.
...and that was just from going downtown on that younger chick! Imagine if he'd then fallen off a motorcycle!!!!! (Old fat ba****ds should remain uptown with their wives--they'll live longer!).
