I like the plus one scenario, but the only way to have a true champion will be to have a playoff involving more than just the top four. This year, who's to say if tu is better than Cal, or if several other teams are not better, for that matter. One way to have a true champion determined is to have 16 teams vie for the championship. It could be done with the current Bowl system "plus two." Here's how: Take the top 16 in the final BCS standings. #1 plays number #16, #2 plays #15, etc. The higher seeded (based on BCS ranking) team plays at home. Those eight games would be played on December 11 this year. The eight winners (the "Elite Eight") would play in the four "BCS" bowls on January 1. The "Final Four" would play on January 8, and the Championship game would be played on January 15. i believe under that scenario, no games would have to be played during finals, and the season would not need to be cut shorter or begin earlier. Some may say "that's too many games," or "hotshot pro prospects risk injury too much." If so, I'd be happy for now with an eight team playoff. It could be done: Take the top eight in the final BCS standings. #1 plays number #8, #2 plays #7, etc. The higher seeded (based on BCS ranking) team plays at home. Those four games would be played on December 11 this year. The four winners (the "Final Four") would play in two of the four "BCS" bowls, with the bowls alternating as is currently done for the MNC game. The two winners would play on January 8 for the championship. This would generally give all of the teams that had one slip up but improved throughout the year to prove on the field that they are the best. The drawback may be that two of the current BCS Bowls would get teams ranked 9 - 12. But every other year, those two Bowls will have top teams. This year, we could have the following first round games: Louisville at USC Georgia at OU Utah @ Auburn Texas @ Cal (or Cal @ Texas) Then, if the higher seeded teams were to win, we would be looking at USC/Cal in the Rose and OU/Auburn in the Orange. I'd like to see those games! I wouldn't have any automatic bids for conference winners. Congratulations, Pittsburgh, you won the Big Least. Enjoy yourselves at the Liberty Bowl!
If Louisiana high school players that go deep into the playoffs in the 5 divisions 32 game playoff system can play an extra 5 games its certainly not to much to ask of more mature and more physically developed college players to do the same. Its already being done that way in all divisions of college football other than D1A. Do you think D1A players are somehow more fragile and prone to injury than the lower division players?
