Now that you say it, he does look like Huck Fin. Pretty sure the stick was run through the head/gill, not tied.
must be some cutthroat trout he caught fly fishing. or maybe golden trout. they are usually small like that.
I think you are right. Probably Goldens. Plus, most trout other than goldens have a limit of around 10 a day. It makes sense, lake fishing in Montana probably an over populated lake full of Goldens
