The truth, I think, is that it has less to do with preseason rankings & more to do with which teams have the largest fan bases & will and bring in the most money. LSU is a fairly storied program, has enjoyed success recently, and has a pretty big fan base. This gives us an advantage over many teams, but not all as the media (and perhaps, the country) has a few favorites that bowl games will prefer over all others.
