I'm all for drug companies making a profit, but how in the hell is this right? KV Pharmaceutical got the FDA to certify them as the only one who could make and sell a drug that has been made for years by local pharmacists. They are sending cease and desist orders to the compounding pharmacists that have made it in the past. KV did not do the R&D on this drug, they just were successful in getting the FDA to allow them to monopolize the market. From $10 to $1500 bucks a dose? Total cost of the drug over the term of a pregnancy that it is prescribed for will go from $200 to $30,000. Crap like this and trial attorneys are a huge part of what is wrong with our medical system. If these douche bags had developed the drug, that is one thing. This is just outright gouging and should be illegal. Link
You can bet your azz that somebody got paid under the table on this one. When the next administration comes in the guys that are in there now and approved this will probably get a real soft and easy job on kv pharma's board. Our political bureaucracy at it's best.
im all for insuring drug safety (which is the reasoning for selling it only through this company) but the markup is too high. a similar thing has been done with other drugs that used to be compounded by local pharmacists---like vancomycin. but it just went from $10 to $50 so not as big a deal.
Americans will pay 100$ for the same drug they pay 5$ for overseas. The average American is being assaulted from all sides. The goverment wants to control every aspect of your life, the big corporations want to send your job overseas and charge you out the azz for everything they can, the Islamic jihadist want to kill you, the drug companies want to take both an arm and a leg to save you if you get sick and worst of all no more capt n crunch! What's the world coming to?
if the drug were being mass produced, to allow more pregnant women with high risk for premature delivery access to the drug (compounding pharmacists arent everywhere), that would be a good thing. instead, greed took over, and what could have saved god knows how much with the financial and emotional expense of premature births, is now just another method of gouging and cornering the market. mass production could have been granted/used in a way that would do a lot of good. instead, it is likely going to drive up the number of premature births because it takes away affordable access to the drug. karma, do your thing.
