After the pass interference against Auburn was overruled, the clock started and ran down about 30 seconds before Auburn ran their first play. What I would like to know is was the clock supposed to start running even though the preceding play was an incomplete pass? I was thinking that maybe they botched that one up to but I'm not sure, maybe the damn thing is supposed to run on all change of possessions.
After several changes, the last version of the rule was the clock starts on "ready for play" after every change of possession. If an incomplete pass happened on 3rd down, for instance, the clock would start at the snap.
I checked the NCAA rules site. The short answer is the clock starts on a change of possession and when the ball is free kicked. Here's a link to the NCAA's 2006 rules supplement. http://www.ncaa.org/wps/portal/!ut/.../eprise/main/playingrules/football/2005/index
