Three of my favorite sports headlines were in the sports section of the Mobile Register. Saturday morning, November 6, 1993 --- TIDE COULD LOOSE, PIGS MIGHT FLY Sunday morning, November 7, 1993 - LSU CRASHES BAMA’S PARTY AFTER 31 CONSECUTIVE GAMES WITHOUT A LOSS, TIDE STUMBLES IN TUSCALOOSA AND PROBABLY FORFEITS ANY CHANCE OF REPEATING AS NATIONAL CHAMPS And then in a follow up article on November 9, 1993 - PIGS, WAREAGLES ARE FLYING HIGH; TIDE IS LOW My wife and I were in Tuscaloosa for the game. Nothing on the line for LSU, but it sure was great to see the Tigers take the down the Tide under Stallings. It was probably the highlight of Hallman's coaching life. ldskule: :helmet:
If not statistically, emotionally it has to be one of the best defensive games in LSU history. It was the best LSU defensive play I recall until Saban/Lavalais came to town.
I remember some damn good defensive teams from the past - 69 - 70 were excellent D's. Most of the 60s were very good defensive teams.
'Pigs Fly Over Alabama' - who could ever forget? B/W this and the tool from Tenn writing about Death Valley, I think that people may have finally learned a lesson. You don't prod a Tiger.
I wonder whatever happened to Jimmy Wigfield, I haven't seen his name in years. I believe Guilbeau was on staff back then as well, too bad it wasn’t him who wrote the headline I remember being all fired up for the game after we had beaten Ole Miss on the ugliest field goal you ever saw. I’m sorry I didn’t go to the game, but it really was pretty fine to beat Alabama and break their winning streak. November 6, 1993: Sideline view @ Tide could lose, pigs might fly WIGFIELD This is going to be a dull day in the SEC unless Auburn and Alabama both lose and that's not going to happen so without further delay, let's get to the picks (last week 4-2, on the season 41-15, a .732 winning percentage): LSU at Alabama Remember when this game used to mean something? Remember when the visiting team always seemed to win? To lose, Alabama would have to play its worst game since, well, Gene Stallings' Alabama debut in 1990, when he lost to Curley Hallman and Southern Mississippi. That doesn't seem likely but what does is Brian Burgdorf looking like an All-American quarterback against the Tigers and the Tide defense looking dominant for the second week in a row. Stallings will be merciful to his old pal Hallman. ALABAMA 30, LSU 7.
Yep, I don't think Hallman's teams ranked statistically in anything. I was just referring to that one performance.
