Last fall before the Oregon State game I emailed the guy, asking if he knew what team posted the worst record following a National Championship season. The emails a little long, but check this out:

"Ok Andy....this is REALLY going to shock you, but after 9
    months......i'm
FINALLY going to answer your question! lol. Of course, i'm sure is no
    longer
relivant. You've surely found the answer somewhere else, but, i wanted
    to at
least prove to you i keep my promises....even if they are belated.

Ok.....best to worst. National Champions one year, in the toilet the
    next.
Believe it or not only one team went to a losing record, Ohio State was
    NC
    in 1942 with a 9-1 record. In 1943 the Buckeyes were 3-6-0! How's that
    for a
    fall.

The rest are not so bad.

    Penn State 1986 12-0 to 1987 8-4
    Nebraska 1997 13-0 to 1998 9-4
    BYU 1984 13-0 to 1985 11-3
    So. Cal. 1962 11-0 to 1963 7-3

there are literally dozens who dropped two games the year after...too
numerous to mention. So, do i at least get a passing grade considering
    i answered at all?

I just got finished with the ESPN book 3 days ago....it will be
    released
September 1. Whew.....what a long 3 years but you should see the
    finished
product! Fans are in for a rare treat. Take care!

    Richard Billingsley"

The last time I talked to the guy was in August of 04. He sure researches his stuff thoroughly. Anybody know what ESPN book he's talking about?

Kudos to the Billingsley man! :thumb:

That name sounds familiar. Isn't his rankings part of the BCS components?

Oh, is that why nobody responded? Nobody knows who he is? I guess I thought he was more well known. He makes a ranking system called the Billingsley Report. He's affiliated with Nationalchamps.net. That's where I found him.

His rankings are in fact one of the six computer rankings the BCS used last year. I like his rankings because he shows the archive week to week. He also has a pretty good article about the theory behind his rankings on his website.

Billingsley has some good stuff. He ranked the top 200 teams of all time. The '58 team is 85th overall, and the '03 team is 130th (USC's '03 team is 136), the '59 team barely made the cut, coming in at 199.

Yeah its an interesting list. Our 2004 team comes in at 23rd. We had 8 teams total make the list.

Uh oh...maybe this belongs in the smack forum :yelwink2:
