Rich Rodriguez brings back Michigan assistant day after firings

(AP) -- Fred Jackson was brought back as Michigan's running backs coach on Friday, a day after new coach Rich Rodriguez fired all the assistants on Lloyd Carr's staff.

"Rich spoke with everyone individually last night and did not want to hold them up in exploring other options," said school spokesman David Ablauf. "He has rehired Fred Jackson as an offensive coach."

Rodriguez met with the coaches one by one at Schembechler Hall on Thursday, as the retiring Carr packed up his belongings in boxes, clearing space for his successor.

Carr will coach the Wolverines on Jan. 1 against Florida in the Capital One Bowl, ending his 13th season as their head coach, then Rodriguez will take over.

But the former West Virginia coach already put his mark on the program by firing each of Carr's assistants, all of whom were given two-year deals in March that will pay them through Feb. 28, 2009. Their firings are effective after the bowl game.

Jackson had been fired along with Ron English, defensive coordinator; Mike DeBord, offensive coordinator; Erik Campbell, wide receivers and assistant head coach; Vance Bedford, defensive backs; Scot Loeffler, quarterbacks; Andy Moeller, offensive line; Steve Stripling, defensive line; and Steve Szabo, linebackers.

While helping Michigan prepare to play the Gators, the assistant coaches are free to pursue other jobs. If they don't land a job, they still will be paid by the school.

Some of Rodriguez's coaches from West Virginia are expected to join him in Ann Arbor. He introduced offensive coordinator Calvin Magee and secondary coach and recruiting coordinator Tony Gibson at his Michigan news conference on Monday.

Well, apparently they got two year deals that pay them through March 2009, so even if they aren't on staff, they are getting paid for year or more after his retirement anyway. If they land another job before next season, they'll be getting two salaries for a year. So it sounds like they at least fulfilled the spirit of that deal.

Usually contracts are crafted so that if the coach gets another job, they don't get paid by the old school (maybe the old school will make up the difference in salaries if the new job doesn't pay as much).

This is the way I understand it too.

Hell I don't blame RR for getting rid of them. This should have been done several years ago.

Neither me. I mean, everyone on that coaching staff is responsible for losing to a I-AA school for crying out loud....

I know Miles said he has his own agenda when it comes to finding our new DC--and that's fine with me because I'm sure he's spending every minute of his time planning for tOSU, but RR is doing nothing right now but brainstorming as to who he wants on his staff at Michigan. I just hope that doesn't mean that RR has enough free time to go after Tenuta while Miles is busy preparing our team for the title game.

That scenerio is yet another reason why I can't stand the college practice of firing/hiring coaches before the final game of the college football season is over. The NFL has adopted an "anti-tampering" policy that prohibits other teams from contacting coaches currently on teams that haven't ended their seasons (i.e. they are still in the playoffs). For all practical purposes, the bowl season IS an extension of a team's season and they should NOT be raided for coaches until their final game is played.

I would LOVE to see a rule put in place by the NCAA that would prohibit programs from hiring any coach that is currently employeed by another school until after the BCS title game. You want to announce that you've fired a coach or announce that a coach will resign before then? Do so at your own risk--but you shouldn't be allowed to ruin another team's season by taking their coach

I've been saying for years that the offense needed some spiffing up. Guess you got be careful what you ask for. lol. I don't know how well CRR's offense will work in the B10, but with any luck there won't be any more of this losing in the 4th after starting the 4th with a double digit lead. Man that's enough to get the blood boiling good.

I think West Virgina will be the team most affected by losing its coach. Its not only losing its head coach, but all those assistants that Rodriguez is taking with him.

RR's spread offense would fair very well in the Big10 with many teams showing their weakness to the spread over the last few years. However, the main question is does he have the right type of athletes to run a full blown spread like he had a WV. As of now I do not think so.

I believe he will use a hybrid spread along with the power formations of the Big10 until he gets the players he needs. One of the major needs will be Olineman that are quick and have the ability to stunt all game long.
