Miles comes from that old-school, Big-10, run-it-up-the-middle all the time brand. From what I hear, he wanted to run the damn ball on the last play of the Bama game (in OT), but Jimbo simply would not have it. Either way, think back to some of our more successful campaigns in recent years, like 2001 & 2003. Those offenses are really what Jimbo's all about. Good balance, great utilization of talent, and not afraid to let it fly when appropriate. Yeah, we had good balance this year (contrary to popular belief). But to say that the talent was properly utilized is foolish. All those freaking sideline passes...are you kidding me? With the kind of speed we have at wideout? No way will I ever believe those were Jimbo's doing. I think he is a great OC whose talents were trampled by a head coach this year (and a lot last year, too - but given the QB situation, I can't say I would have done it any differently).
Seems bizarre to me. Like Friday mentions, the starter is always helping out the back-up on the sideline. I hope you're right Clair, but it sure didn't sound like that in the article.
Several questions come to mind with no obvious answers. 1. Why would JR miss an expense paid trip to the Bowl game? 2. If JR has to stay home to recover a shoulder, is the injury is worse than reported? 3. Is Russell staying out for another reason? Grades? team suspension? 4. Is coach Miles leaving him home so Flynn doesn't worry about being replaced? 5. Is coach Miles leaving him home to reduce expectations and pressure for LSU in the media? 6. Is coach Miles leaving him home to prevent speculation that "he should have put in Russell". 7. Has all of this story come out yet? It is very odd that a lightly injured player would not accompany his teammates to the bowl game.
bizarre is correct! I agree with NoLimit, 'clair and others. Russell is a teammate. Period. I won't say he carried the team to get to the Peach as that will create another thread - but he deserves to be there. He was a part of every game. And he would be useful as pointed out earlier by assisting Matt on the sidelines dicsussing coverages, blitzes, etc. I just hope Miles thought it best for him to remain in BR and show up prior to the game.
The grade angle seems consistent with things that I've been hearing. I know that it's often very useful for a QB to view the game from the sidelines. I've heard a lot of them say that it helps them see the field and plays differently their next time out.
Someone is passing gas here....something stinks......why wouldn't he want to be there to receive the gifts, eat really good, and just enjoy the rewards of a bowl game? Especially with no pressures on him. He deserves it. I would think he would "want" to be with his friends and teammates/ and help out anyway he could. How bad is this shoulder separation really? A. Manning played against LSU with his arm in a cast in 1970. Certainly sports medicine has improved in that time frame. The OM linebacker that played this year with his right arm so wrapped in a cast and padding that he looked like he had on a club? How many LSU linemen have played injured to some degree? I don't want him to take any unnecessary chances but (?). Leave his entire uniform in BR, but he should be there. 2-4-6-8---listen to them flatuate.
I guarantee there is more to this story. No way in hell he shouldn't be there supporting the team and reaping the benefits of Bowl week with his team. The injury is to his non throwing shoulder. It is not like the trainers could not give him treatments in Atlanta. And he earned the right to enjoy the festivities. Smells like he is either getting ready for something else, or is in violation of something.
