I've heard the story about the Mich. St. asst, as well as 7 other schools involving the Means situation.

It was reported that when Mich. St. learned he was being shopped the way he was, they backed off recruiting him...IF I recall that correctly...been a while since I read those reports, etc.

But, Terry, do you care to elaborate more about Saban making "improper contact" in Alabama while he was at LSU? I think you said something about that once. What was up with that?

I said there was improper contact made, not Saban had made it. It was in Huntsville, with Darby and Robinson, and their were extra incentives offered to both to swith their verbals. It just so happens that one of their coaches is one of the coaches that helps out with our summer camps...he notified the Unversity, the University notified LSU, and you guys agreed to stay out of Huntsville that spring and the following year.

I can't recall who it was on your staff handling that area back then...but, one of your boosters knew about your contact with those two players and came to both of them with the offers.

Let me add this...

It just dawned on me you may have been talking about a different situation StaceyO.

Recall the heated exchange between Saban and fRan right after the game in BR? That exchange centered around feelers Saban had put out to Pope who was on our staff at that time. While I don't believe it is illegal, saying it's improper is a correct statement.

It's about like talking with Fisher and Moffitt...he asked permission, was granted that permission, and had serious talks with Fisher. Moffitt, on the other hand, indicated he was happy with his family life in the BR area...and that ended that.

Actually the story I was thinking of was this one involving improper contact during a dead period. Nothing about a booster offering "incentives"here. Is there anyting on the record about that, Terry?

LSU responds to coach Saban's violations

(U-WIRE) BATON ROUGE, La. -- LSU reprimanded coach Nick Saban for supposed recruiting violations he and his staff made in April and May 2001.
An investigation revealed Saban and his assistant coaches made improper contact with prospects. Athletics Director Skip Bertman confirmed the violations occurred last spring and summer.

According to The Advocate, LSU reported the three secondary recruiting violations to the NCAA and SEC in October 2001. First, Saban was speaking to a high school coach while a prospective athlete was present. Second, Saban and an assistant had "improper contact" with a prospective athlete at a different school. Third, a former LSU assistant coach either called a prospective athlete during a no-call week or called a prospective athlete more times than is allowed by NCAA regulations.

According to the Times-Picayune, the coach involved in the third violation had five instances of "impermissible" phone calls found by LSU. It also was reported that one incident breaking the no-contact rule involved Evangel Christian Academy in Shreveport.

LSU reprimanded Saban for these actions by limiting the number of days he can recruit this spring. The SEC and NCAA accepted this self-imposed judgment recommended by LSU's attorney Mike Pharis to SEC commissioner Roy Kramer.

Nick Saban was not available for comment Monday. However, before a press conference on Saturday, Saban said in front of reporters he was "pissed off" about the situation's hype.

"I got every kid that we are recruiting calling me, asking me about probation and all this stuff," Saban said.

In an Advocate article, Saban denied violating regulations while recruiting. "If it was a minor violation, it was a minor violation, and we'll make sure it's not done again in the future," Saban said. "But I still don't think I did anything wrong."

The article said other SEC schools accused Saban of making improper contacts with prospects in May 2001. This prompted the SEC to ask William Sievers to investigate the accusations. Bertman did not want to comment on the violations.

"Those happened before I was the Athletics Director, and I'm not familiar with them," Bertman said.

I know nothing more than what's said in that article Red...I don't believe it involved any of our recruits. I seem to recall seeing some comment it was a matter of the Big 12 contacting the SEC about it...I KNOW it wasn't as blatant as Sampson at OU and their basketball program.

I know it's a weak statement, but I do wonder how they keep up with so many details. I feel, it's the reason you see the Dir. of Football Operations position growing so much lately. Although, that may be something the compliance officer should handle...

This has finally been put to rest. On TideFans, I found a thread about an interview Curtis did today. The title of the thread is JT Curtis...I've never been offered nor would I ever accept a job...etc. Dead rumor now.:thumb:

Everybody's after Joe McKnight. I sure wish I was Joe McKnight. He's gonna make it easy for his new head coach's Pimp to make lot's of money. I think Pete Carrol's gonna go to Miami for 8 mill a year and USC's gonna give Saban 6 mill a year and break Bama's heart. Then Bama's gonna go get Steve Spurrier for 9 million a year. So who's gonna be the first 10 mill a year coach. And what about all these contracts that say a coach can be paid in the top 3 salaries if they win an NC. What a mess. I guess Mike Price really screwed up with that hooker, roll tide. It's just a matter of time NFL coaching salaries go through the roof. I'm just happy we have a committed good professional man like Miles. I think he really loves his players and his committed way beyond most coaches. He is so not about himself but about the players. Geaux Tigers, we will win with what we have. We will beat there's with ours and can beat ours with theres cause our coaching staff is great!

Opps, I guess I got carried away. Does Joe McKnight know he can own the stare of Louisiana if he plays at LSU???
