4 years ago when Shula was hired there was quite a bit of talk, behind the scenes, about "if this doesn't work out, and we hope it does, we'll know in 3 years. At that point, beginning what would be year 5 in the Shula contract would be the ideal time to make the move because as of Feb. 1 of that year the santions will be behind us." By that statement, we were refering to the "window" being closed and all monies owed being paid back to the University.

Understand, we all wanted Shula to succeed, but suspected after year 2, knew after year 3 (even with the 10-3 record). He wasn't cut out for the HC position at a school like ours. Did he understand what it was like living in that environment? Sure he did. BUT, more importantly, "could he handle it?" We all know the answer to that.

Now, as far as "selling our soul" I assume you understand how coach contracts are structured, right? Only a small portion of the contract is paid by the state, the rest based on shoe, uniform, TV and Radio, camps etc.

Based on what I'm hearing, and the contract has been finalized nor signed (which is normal in situations like these) his salary from UA is only about $200K more than what he received from LSU.

    That's selling the soul?

With the amount of money coaches are paid, and the way we've see it rise in the last two years, would it be a fair statement to make to say "LSU sold its soul when he was their after winning the NC?"

Do you see where this confuses me? LSU didn't bump his salary, the restructured his "incentives." That money wasn't coming out of the state's coffers. It's the same situation here at Alabama. In fact, there is already a difference being felt in revenue's based on his hire alone.

I've only seen in mention one time here that Saban actually is taking a pay cut for 3 years from what he was supposed to receive from the 'Fins. BUT, what's $500K when you are making $3.5MM your first year, eh?

All the above except beating up the math nerds.

Dissent? Not among the players, per se', but a lack of respect from those players towards the HC.

As far as your last question is concerned...some of these kids are still in school, and I'm not about to tell their stories on public forums. Especially, when they are still in school. It's just not the right thing to do.
