I think he'll put the same kind of talent on the field as he did at LSU but that doesn't GUARANTEE a NC. Again, A LOT of things have to go your way. Bama fans are just excited that's all. Yes, some are dumb as a box of rocks , their knuckles drag the ground and they drool on themselves without knowing it. But hey, we all have our family problems. But most Bama fans KNOW that the SEC is a different animal and all we want is a shot. We want to see what we can do when we have quality players (across the board) and depth and a quality coach walking the sidelines.
I give Saban credit for recruiting. Just like he did here, he locked up the instate talent. Yes he got some good out-of-staters but he made sure that very few of the Alabama talent left the state.
Why do Bama fans constantly blame Mike Shula for everything wrong with Bama? Didn't someone hire Mike Shula? Didn't someone give Mike Shula an extension the year before Bama fired him? Didn't Mike Shula have Bama in the hunt for a National Championship the year before he was fired? Didn't John Parker Wilson digress under Major Applewhite this year? Why do you and other Bama fans constantly throw your current team of players under the bus because Shula recruited them? Mike Shula was a great QB for Bama. I loved Mike Shula's ability to over achieve as a player. Nick Saban is probably the only coach in College Football who can come in and right the ship at Bama. It takes a hard nosed coach who will challenge any and everyone to get it done right at Bama. I personally think you guys should thank Mike Shula for all his efforts to do his best and welcome him back to your school. He is a Bama man after all and has contributed a large part of his life to Alabama Football.
Easy, Buzzard, we all know there is a lot of luck involved. But would college football observers be wrong if they thought that Alabama went out and hired Nick away from a big NFL contract, made him the highest paid coach in college ball, and gave him complete control of the football program . . . because they wanted championships again? I mean, that's what we all do, don't we. From my observations on Tidefans, it seems that the average Bamafan is definitely counting on Nick to repeat his success at LSU. He's surely doing it in recruiting. Don't Bamafans expect him to do it in championships, too?
Is it just me, or do you counter your own argument, here. Winning a BCS championship once in ten years is a tough thing to do. Winning it twice puts a program in elite status. Winning it at all after surviving an SEC schedule in the current epoch will remain a very difficult feat. If Bama never wins a BCS NC, it won't NECESSARILY mean failure. Unless Bammeroids define it that way for themselves. By your definition, nearly every football program in the country that pays its HC a competitive salary is a failure. Georgia? Auburn (ouch)? Oregon? West Virginia (last year or so)? Virginia Tech?
I commend Mike Shula for taking the job. I commend Mike Shula for not morally embarrassing the college. And I also do not blame Mike Shula for the failures of Alabama. They were there BEFORE Mike Shula got there. Mike Shula from a coaching and recruiting standpoint did not CAUSE the problems at Alabama but did not do anything to help it. I have a hard time "thanking" Mike Shula for not disciplining his assistant coaches when they aren't performing. I have a hard time "thanking" Mike Shula for being so stubborn headed to not DO ANYTHING when something has proved not to work. I have a hard time "thanking" Mike Shula for not working hard enough to secure some of the best recruits in Alabama, ala Mobile area. He didn't even know who FRIGGIN' BURTON SCOTT WAS!!! The kid WANTED TO COME TO BAMA, one of the most explosive athletes in the country and Alabama's head coach doesn't even know who he is!!!??? Call it what you want but that's not a hard worker if you ask me.
I think as fans WE THINK we will win a NC in five years but to say we EXPECT IT or else is off base. Of course each team hires a coach with the inherent goal/expectation to win a title. But with Bama it's not to the degree that if we don't win one in five years we're going to start lighting houses on fire or throwing bricks through windows or fire Saban. I think that has been misunderstood or exaggerated. If we don't win a NC in five years I'm not going to call for his head. I've stated my expectations in a previous post. If we do this I'll be pleased.
In Tuscaloosa they expect to be like LSU, obviously. But it is not due to the results. They just want to be competitive like us -- lose 1st rounders and reload. Right now they cant do that.
