I'm curious, how do you reach the notion that the SEC schedule is up to the AD? The only thing they are listened to concerns where the off date is going to fall. And even then, it's not much of a choice, but a wish.

I'm aware of the fact that we all have our conference opponents set. Things do get changed though, for instance, LSU and MSU negotiated with the help of ESPN to have a Thursday night season opener instead of us opening with Middle Tenn. So there is some room for ADs to influence where some conference games fall. If LSU had just sat on their hands ESPN would have easily scooped up a different matchup. As for OOC, its pretty much up to each university, I suppose some ADs have their hands tied if they have an OOC rival that the HAVE to play each year but that's not the case in most situations. I guess what I meant to say is Bama's situation isn't the first, won't be the last, and isn't in anyway a unique consequence of other SEC schools getting together to plan off weeks before their Bama game (I'm sure there are plenty that would like their off week between some other pair of games anyway). Pass along my apologies to Mr. Mal, didn't realize he was so beloved .

EDIT: Another example of what I was talking about with scheduling is what happened with our home and home series with VATech. Went up to blacksburg awhile back and the Hokies decided they weren't up to traveling down to Louisiana for awhile. This year they'll finally make good on that trip but I'd be willing to bet the contract for that series was negotiated in the late 90's... Who knew where we'd each be standing in the fall of 2007? We certainly weren't expecting to have to wait this long to get them at home. Can't wait for that one, so long as we don't let them screw with our NC run that we've got planned down here!

by the way, is Finebaum still kissing the Tide's ass over there? I've never seen such an about face by such a self proclaimed "controversial character". Whatever happened to "where coaches get fired!" and the days of riling up the Tide faithful. I can't imagine he's too popular even in his own Vol country right now.

IF anything, Finebaum knows that if he gets off on the wrong foot with Saban he's not going to be able to get the air/face time he would like to have. He started off on fRan when he first arrived on campus and lost any chance he had to talk to DF. Lessoned learned? It certainly seems so.

Secondly, and I know there are some that don't want to admit this, but PF understands with the right HC in charge it changes the picture in Tuscaloosa.

As to OOC schedules. A lot don't realize how difficult it is to schedule quality, OOC opponents. As example, we talked with USC for two years trying to get a home and home set with them. With the schedules being made in advance for years to come it was something we just couldn't work out. The example you mentioned with Va. Tech is a lot like what happened with Penn State and Alabama. We had that series scheduled earlier, but financial reasons on both sides lead to the series getting postponed for a few years. The game with FSU took over a year to get set, then, another several months for the TV people to come to an agreement on who gets to televise it. (that's another reason OOC games can be difficult to work out. BUT, that's where the bills are paid.)

Again, I don't give a flyin' ______ when the off week is. I like where ours is set, and would prefer it happening sometime in the middle of the season than say, the next to last week.

If anyone is interesed, I tweeked the 2007 SEC helmet scheule a bit and I also made a NFL regular season schedule. I wanted to print out a 24X36 of the one made by Barrett Gilbreath, but it was to grainy. So if you have a large format printer, it looks pretty good. The files are to big for the upload, so if you want I can Email it to you. These are low res versions of the SEC & NFL schedules.
