Everyone said the option was dead in the 80's because it wasn't as exciting to watch as the more pro style west coast offense. But Nebraska did well with it all the way until '03. I think using the option like the 95 Huskers did, would still do amazing things... especially when they started using Frazier to throw out of it also. Because the option isn't "pretty"... the media says it won't work... but if you have the right players... it will win a lot of ballgames.
I guess that middle aged cracker coach is a judgmental not-so-smart type for suspending him twice and not letting him play in anymore games since The Varsity incident, minus mop up duty against LaTech. He must be pre-disposed to not liking milktoast replicas. Most reasonable people hope RP matures and gets his act together. He has too much potential not to do so. I hope he lights up Tenn, then keeps his nose clean during the offseason.
LSU usually has pretty good luck when our backups get involved in the Georgia Dome. 2000 Peach Bowl - Rohan in for Booty - Come from behind W. 2001 SECCG - Mauck in for Rohan - Keeps UT out of the NC. 2005 Peach Bowl - Flynn in for JR - You know how that one goes.
Very interesting thread. I think respect, either on the field or off the field, is earned. As far as on the field I think RP gets an "incomplete". There just isn't enough there to judge what he could or couldn't do. If I had to guess why the decision was made to favor Flynn over RP I would have to go with decision making and ball security. I think most people would agree that RP appears to be more talented than Flynn so the only thing to assume is that RP may have trouble reading defenses, checking out of plays, going through his receiver progressions, and proecting the football. Having no other information you would have to assume that the coaches are seeing these types of things in practice and therefore Flynn gets the nod. I think the off field stuff plays a part but I'm sure the on field aspects hold more weight. As far as me personally I really question a college kid who has obviously retained the services of an attorney. If you are not in trouble consistently and don't plan on being in trouble on a consistent basis then you don't have an attorney on speed dial. I also think the off field incidents can sometimes relate directly to on field play. The reason I say this is that it goes to intelligence. It goes to making choices. It goes to judging right from wrong. If you get off field behavior where you have poor choices in these areas then why do we expect a player to make good intelligent decisions on the field. Please don't get me wrong, in no way do I think RP is unintelligent but he does have a pattern of poor choices and poor choices are just that, poor choices. Is he making poor choices in practice and that's why the coaches give the nod to Flynn? Well, only they know that but it could be one of the factors that plays a part. I made some pretty stupid decisions when I was his age as well so my hope is that he can learn from mistakes, turn things around and earn the respect of the players around him. I'm not sure where the leadership for next years team is going to come from but it would be great to see RP become that leader that the QB position traditionally provides. Please excuse the dissertation.
