A name that should be mentioned that isn't: Dan Hawkins, head coach at Boise State. I LOVE watching the Broncos play. Their offensive philosophy; attack, attack, attack, score, score, score. He does this with mountain boys from Idaho and the occassional California kid; it's frightening to think what this guy could do with real speed. If we could hire him with the stipulation that he keep Muschamp and the current defensive staff, I have no doubt he would excel here. He picked up right where Houston Nutt left off and has put BSU on the map. They are now the non-BCS program all the big boys are afraid to play. Only problem is, he just signed a long term deal at BSU, which guarantees him through 2009 and, with Urban Meyer going to Florida, makes him the highest paid college football coach outside of the BCS.
... 1. Curly Hallman 2. Jerry Dinardo 3. Mike Archer(not sure Kentucky would be willing to let him go, just to much success as an assistant) 4. Lou Tepper (great head coach, he just needs a defensive coordinator) 5. Lou Holts ( but his coaching career got buried at south carlonia along with many other coaching careers) 6. Jackie Sherill ( now theres a head coach) 7. Jerry Stovall 8. Cutcliffe is available.(he is a great QB coach, just ask the Mannyings) 9. 10. There has to be two more out there somewhere. seriously
Ferentz isn't going to leave Iowa for at least 7 more years.(His youngest son is in 5th grade) Might as well cross him off of anything but a "wish" list.
jetstorm i did mention hawkins.i think he would be a good hire if he could keep the current defensive staff
I think whoever it is will come as quite a surprise. Remember, Saban had a pretty stable-looking gig in East Lansing before he had Jimmy Sexton contact LSU. I think it'll be a current head coach who's familiar with Louisiana and Texas recruiting. There are a number of variables involved we should keep in mind, starting with the fact LSU has a brand new chancellor. What's going to be first and foremost on his wish list for a new coach? Will Skip be more inclined to seek a coach who's not likely to jump to the NFL soon over who he feels is the best coach? Questions, questions, questions. Ideally, I'd like to see LSU go for the gusto--a talented, african-american assistant w/ both college and pro coaching experience. Why af-american? A few reasons include it gives LSU an edge in recruiting, possibly also ensures the coach stays a long time (sad but true is the fact that so few get NFL HC gigs). Also would like someone young. Maurice Carthon, for example? He's young, but likely jonesing for an NFL HC gig. On the other hand, there are some older, long-time NFL coaches I think who could move to a big-time college program and do well. Sherm Lewis is one and, don't laugh, but Wade Phillips is, too. Wade is far more than Bum's son and ex-Saints interim HC. He's respected as one of the finest defensive minds in the game, yet is unlikely to get another shot at HC despite repeated attempts to do so. What if Wade says screw the NFL, takes over a top 10 program, taps into that rich Texas and La. player base and coaches the hell out of them, extending the run of excellent defenses LSU has become know for fielding. Just some random, out of the box thinking on my part. Take it with a grain of salt.
A great African American coach would be great if we hire him because he's going to be a great coach, not because of his skin color. I am sure there are several out there that would qualify. But I also think that Skip would hire a proven head coach instead of promoting an assistant. Someone who has proven they can lead a program, recruit against the best, graduate players, etc.
